Thankfully, the new series ““NCIS: Origins”” aims to shed light on some of the enigmatic aspects of his code of conduct.
In the third episode of NCIS: Origins titled “Bend, Don’t Break,” we find the younger Gibbs examining pieces of paper with his rules written on them. Some of these rules are familiar, like rule number eight which advises, “Never assume anything.” However, two new rules, numbers 21 and 29, also appear, but they perfectly align with Gibbs’ admirable character. The first one, rule 21, states, “Everyone is equal under the law,” a principle that has undoubtedly contributed to his exceptional work as an agent. The second one, rule 29, says, “Learn to follow orders before giving them,” which offers insight into how he will eventually rise to become an outstanding leader.
This episode underscores once more that Gibbs is a honorable man steeped in solid principles. Yet, he’s currently navigating through a tough phase in life, as he mourns the loss of both his wife and daughter. Consequently, “Bend, Don’t Break” portrays a character struggling with his personal ethical compass.
NCIS: Origins reminds us why Gibbs has rules
In “NCIS: Origins,” we find Leroy Jethro Gibbs grappling with deep sorrow following the loss of his wife and daughter. By episode 3, overwhelmed by grief, Gibbs discards his usual rulebook, opting for a more flexible approach to his conduct. This seems like his means of enduring without them. Yet, as an older Gibbs narrates, viewers are reminded of why he established these guidelines in the first place.
On the TV series “NCIS”, Gibbs follows numerous rules not just as a matter of professionalism, but also to keep his connection with his wife strong. In season 6, we learn that he abides by these guidelines due to her influence and conviction. Even when put to the test in episodes like “Bend, Don’t Break,” he continues to uphold them, reaffirming his commitment to her beliefs.
Additionally, you’ll notice that this isn’t the sole reference back to the primary storyline. The rulebook in question seems strikingly similar to the one featured in “NCIS” during Season 7, Episode 24, titled “Rule Fifty-One.” This franchise has a history of introducing plot gaps and inconsistencies, but moments like this are delightful for fans who value detail-oriented storytelling.
