Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS: Origins episode “Touchstones” are ahead!
Tonight, the long-awaited resolution unfolds in the “NCIS: Origins” episode where Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ past is revisited following his family’s tragic demise. The central narrative revolved around Gibbs and his NCIS team searching for a missing girl named Mildred, while also uncovering the motive behind attempts on her life. If this scenario doesn’t resonate, consider watching the episode titled “All’s Not Lost” through your Paramount+ subscription. Although many threads from that episode have been resolved, one particular plot point has remained untouched… until now.
In the upcoming “Origins” episode titled “Touchstones,” set to air in 2025, we find the resolution of a long-standing enigma stemming from this week’s case. This plotline also served as a platform to explore Dick Kowalski, NIS’s Evidence Custodian’s heartrending past. To top it off, by the end of “Touchstones,” there was an unforeseen twist (as I see it) concerning Gibbs and Lala Dominguez’s relationship dynamics.
An NIS Traitor Was Discovered As We Learned About Kowalski’s Past
In tonight’s episode of NCIS: Origins, the storyline revolved around an intrusion into the NIS evidence room, which had a significant impact on Kowalski. The sole item taken was $41,000 from a cocaine sting operation, but the disarray left behind was enough for Kowalski to submit his resignation letter. This unexpected move placed the responsibility of overseeing evidence under Herm Daniels. However, Mary Jo Hayes questioned whether Daniels was equipped to handle the task effectively.

NCIS: Origins’ Showrunners Revealed Plans to Explore Mike Franks’ History, Discussing How They’ll Keep Unraveling His Backstory Through Flashbacks
The executive producer of NCIS: Origins has hinted at an exciting development for characters Gibbs and Randy. I can’t wait to see how it unfolds!
It’s come to light that Kowalski’s response stemmed from traumatic events dating back to the Korean War, where he was captured as a prisoner. Initially serving as a chaplain during the conflict, his faith crumbled over the two years spent in captivity. A stone that one of the guards accidentally kicked towards him during this time became his only source of hope and personal ownership. He still possessed it in 1991. The break-in at the evidence room deeply troubled Kowalski because, for decades, that collection had been the center of his life, and losing it triggered those long-suppressed painful memories.
It’s good news that Kowalski didn’t remain absent from NIS for an extended period. The individual who tampered with the evidence room was, in fact, NIS agent Roger Murphy. He hid the money, although he chickened out and just concealed it somewhere within the office, due to his gambling addiction and mounting debts. However, this wasn’t his most serious infraction. In addition, he admitted to leaking Mildred’s location to Jesse Hatcher, the hitman from “All’s Not Lost,” in return for a $25,000 bribe.
Gibbs And Lala’s Relationship Hit A Setback
While investigating the break-in at the evidence room, Lala encountered a man she previously kissed at a club several episodes prior, during a time when she was still dating Eddie. Upon confusing this man with Eddie, whom Lala referred to as “exceptional,” Gibbs found out about her infidelity. Later, it was revealed that Gibbs had been in the office early on the day Kowalski discovered the room disarray because he wanted to meet up with Lala while she was doing paperwork.
However, unfortunate circumstances arose for Gibbs as Lala suggested it would be best if they didn’t arrive early together on the same days due to her ongoing issues with Eddie and the recent revelation that Gibbs had killed Pedro Hernandez. Furthermore, Lala reached out to Eddie, suggesting either a renewal of their relationship or a chance to properly end things. Given that the producers of NCIS: Origins have hinted that Lala has feelings for Gibbs in more than one way, this development took me by surprise.
Despite only having six episodes remaining in the first season of NCIS: Origins, there’s still a chance for things to improve between these characters and for them to grow closer. Lala might not end up as one of Gibbs’ ex-wives, but given that the older Gibbs mentioned she is central to the story being told in Origins, it’s clear that Lala will play a significant role in his life moving forward.
