Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS: Origins episode “Monsoon” are ahead!
In the “NCIS: Origins” episode titled “One Flew Over,” it was revealed that the unofficial psych profile Mike Franks obtained from Vera Strickland at the start of the series was for his girlfriend, Tish Kwa’la, who had been a victim of sexual assault prior to the series. Tish asked Franks to halt his search for her attacker as she wished to move past that tragic incident. However, David J. North, one of the co-showrunners of “Origins,” hinted in an interview with TopMob that this wouldn’t be a simple matter. True to his words, the latest episode, “Monsoon,” which aired on the 2025 TV schedule, concluded with Tish ending their relationship after Franks admitted he continued his investigation. Yet, Kyle Schmid, who plays the character, indicated in a recent interview that there is more to the story between these two characters yet to unfold.
Following my education about Mike Franks’ portrayal during the flashbacks for “Monsoon,” which is now available on Paramount+, I inquired about his subsequent journey and how he deals with his love leaving him. The actor responded to these queries.
In the climactic scene of the final episode, I managed to corner a character named Mike, posing a question that he conspicuously refused to answer. By choosing silence, Mike inadvertently provided an answer that was far more intriguing. Throughout Episode 13, opportunities abounded for Mike to escape, yet he steadfastly remained. Even at the bittersweet conclusion, he failed to utter the words, “I’ll bury it deep, man. I love you.” Instead, he acknowledged his unspoken feelings by staying put – a testament to their profound bond.
Despite Tish’s departure, Mike knew deep down that their story was far from over. As she closed the door behind her, the weight of their unresolved issues hung heavily in the air. The fact that Tish is an integral part of his life made it nearly impossible for him to walk away. There is a sense of heartache and anticipation as we are left wondering what will become of this broken and violated relationship – a feeling that is both poignant and exhilarating, knowing full well that we’ll be following their story further.
In a flashback during the monsoon season, it was revealed that Mike Franks and Tish first crossed paths when Tish’s tire blew out while driving, just as she passed by Franks who was stranded on the road due to his motorcycle being stolen from a gas station. Franks helped Tish change her tire, and in return, she compensated him for his assistance. However, a strong connection developed between them, leading her to bring him back to her place where she trimmed his hair and shaved off his beard, ultimately giving him the distinctive mustache he is known for.

In the latest episode, the origins of a mystery from an earlier season were resolved while delving into a heart-wrenching past. However, recent developments involving Gibbs and Lala took me by surprise.
In simpler terms, Austin Stowell from the show “Origins” believes that fans of NCIS might not have heard about his character ‘her’ before the prequel, because ‘her’ character was introduced for the first time in the spin-off series.
After returning from the Vietnam War, Frank faced numerous challenges, but meeting Tish was a turning point for him. He managed to turn his life around, and it’s evident that their connection was strong because they remained together for nine years afterwards.
Sadly, upon discovering Frank had deceived her, Tish realized that despite her lingering affection for him, she couldn’t continue their relationship. However, according to Kyle Schmid, these two might not be permanently apart, given Frank’s relentless pursuit of the man who assaulted Tish. Although Mike Franks and Tish Kwa’la don’t end up together in NCIS as it was originally shown, there could potentially be a temporary reunion between them in NCIS: Origins.
At the minimum, Mike Franks is likely to either find Tish’s attacker by the conclusion of Season 1 or make substantial progress in his investigation that sets up a compelling continuation in Season 2, provided CBS renews it. Keep tuned for more episodes of Origins every Monday at 10 pm ET.
