Contains spoilers for “NCIS: Origins” Season 1, Episode 18 — “Cecilia”
Anticipate a significant twist in the narrative as “NCIS: Origins” concludes its first season this month, with the episode titled “Cecilia.” In this installment, Leroy Jethro Gibbs (portrayed by Austin Stowell) grapples with the investigation into the murder of Pedro Hernandez (Thomas Rosales Jr.), a drug dealer who was responsible for the death of Gibbs’ family. A shocking revelation surfaces: Gibbs himself had killed Hernandez in Tijuana prior to his service with NIS, unable to endure Hernandez’s relentless taunts. Gibbs forms an alliance with Lara Macy (Claire Berger), a future associate and head of another division within the “NCIS” universe, who currently serves as a military police investigator.
In time, Lara ascends through the hierarchy at NCIS, eventually assuming the role of Special Agent in Charge at the Office of Special Projects within the Los Angeles division of NIS. This character was pivotal in the two-part episode “Legend,” which functioned as a precursor for “NCIS: Los Angeles.” Fans might remember that Louise Lombard portrayed her on screen, and over time, Lara becomes a fearless, ambitious figure who significantly propels the team forward.
Initially, Lara played a significant role in the storyline of the show, but when the spin-off was given the green light to series, her part was taken over by the more seasoned Hetty Lange (Linda Hunt). In the episode “Legend,” Lara gets reassigned to a French outpost, allowing Hetty to take control. Later on in Season 7’s “Patriot Down” of “NCIS,” Lara met a tragic end through a violent murder. It is also worth noting that Lara will have a crucial part in ensuring Gibbs has a future within “NCIS.
Lara Macy will botch Gibbs’ case — or so he says
As a dedicated “NCIS” enthusiast, I can’t help but recall Lara Macy, the agent who, according to Leroy Jethro Gibbs, would mess up a case against him so badly that he would question her abilities decades later when we were compelled to work together. The unsolved murder of Pedro Hernandez became a cold case with no identified suspects, lingering in our division’s records for years. However, it wasn’t until Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) and Tim McGee (Sean Murray), while teaching a class about cold cases in Mexico, discovered the solution to this old mystery. In an unexpected twist, they uncovered a hidden secret of our revered boss.
Readers are aware that Gibbs’ friends from Camp Pendleton may not be privy to the fact that Gibbs indeed murdered Hernandez. This was done with a sniper rifle, creating a puzzling scenario for “NCIS” viewers. Shortly after returning home from the Gulf War, Gibbs severed his leg cast and pursued Hernandez, eventually killing him and re-entering the country undetected.
After being cleared of the crime, Gibbs is free to continue his remarkable career with NIS. However, he’ll keep a significant secret buried deep within him for many years. This secret contradicts his strict sense of fairness and adherence to rules, causing his friends to be taken aback when he finally reveals it during NCIS Season 16. For the next 30 years, Gibbs will keep this secret close to his chest, and very few people will know about it. Could there be an unexpected twist in Gibb’s story that hasn’t been shown on either the main series or “Origins”? Only time and Macy’s investigation can reveal the truth.
