For over two decades, NCIS has remained a fan favorite and shows no signs of slowing down. Even during its 22nd season, it paused for a midseason break in December 2024. After resolving a minor issue, the show is set to return at the end of this month.

This season, I’m part of the loyal fanbase that’s been following NCIS for 22 seasons, and I must say, there have been quite a few changes in the cast. Specifically, Gary Cole steps into the role of Alden Parker as our team leader, while Rocky Carroll continues to bring Leon Vance, the NCIS director, to life on screen. Among the special agents, we’ve got Timothy McGee (played by Sean Murray), Nick Torres (portrayed by Wilmer Valderrama), and Jessica Knight (brought to life by Katrina Law). Brian Dietzen and Diona Reasonover round out the team as Dr. Jimmy Palmer and forensic specialist Kasie Hines, respectively.

How Many Episodes Will ‘NCIS’ Season 22 Have?

As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the mid-season comeback of NCIS is set for January 27, airing on CBS. Starting from then, you can catch new episodes every Monday at 9 p.m., right there on CBS. And if you’re like me and can’t wait to stream it, don’t worry! Episodes will be available on Paramount+ shortly after their television premiere.

At present, CBS has only scheduled three episodes for the remainder of the NCIS season, without a definitive number on how many episodes will make up the entire season. While it’s common for seasons to consist of 20 or more episodes, the full length isn’t always set in stone. The upcoming episodes are titled “Baker’s Man,” “For Better or Worse,” and “Fun and Games,” with the last one airing on February 10. If production delays don’t prolong things too much, there may be additional episodes following that date.

In the opening episode titled “Baker’s Man,” it’s revealed that the proprietor of Parker’s preferred bakery is under threat due to blackmail. The NCIS team devises a strategy to protect her from the culprits, but things become more complicated when Torres’ hidden romantic relationship is exposed.

Fires Might Cause Delays

Regrettably, the production of NCIS season 22 hasn’t been entirely trouble-free. For several weeks, devastating wildfires have been sweeping through California, causing CBS to temporarily halt the show’s production as the fires approached Los Angeles. As of January 14th, it was reported that the show had resumed filming, with the team taking necessary safety measures to ensure everyone’s well-being.

It’s not uncommon for real-world events to impact the number of episodes in a single season of NCIS. For instance, last season was cut short due to a writers’ strike, limiting it to just 10 episodes. In 2020, the production of the 21st episode from the 17th season had to be halted because of COVID-19, and as a result, that season only had 16 episodes. Similar circumstances led to a reduced number of episodes in the following season.

The return of NCIS to production suggests that more episodes than just the three already announced are likely in progress. In fact, NCIS producer Steven D. Binder hinted at an additional episode named “Killer Instinct” way back in December, which hasn’t been mentioned on CBS’s schedule, indicating that the team is definitely working on more installments. However, it remains to be seen whether season 22 will consist of a full season, considering the production delays. There’s a possibility that CBS could reduce the total number of episodes due to these delays.

What Will Happen at the End of Season 22?

In the upcoming episode of NCIS Season 22, the plot centers around the team tracking down a blackmailer who’s threatening a local bakery. This episode is expected to follow the usual crime-solving pattern we see in each installment, potentially leading up to the season finale for added tension. Interestingly, it seems that some season-long storylines involving the team will resurface, including one particularly dramatic thread from last season.

In the ninth episode, I let slip that I had some exciting vacation plans, and there was this mysterious person I referred to as “babe” whom I kept texting. The synopsis for episode ten hints at unveiling more about my secret romance. To add fuel to the rumors, producer Steven D. Binder teased that the identity of my love interest is someone who’s graced our screens before! As a fan, I can hardly contain my excitement!

In Season 22, the team has faced a persistent danger posed by Gabriel LaRoche, who assumes the role of NCIS Deputy Director. His presence frequently stirs tension within the team. The narrative in this season centers around numerous covert operations and an enigma surrounding the source of leaked information. Suspicions have arisen among the NCIS agents that it could be LaRoche, and by the end of Season 22, the truth should come to light.

In addition, Binder provided details about an upcoming episode named “Killer Instinct” to the publication TV Insider. He mentioned that the storyline would involve special agent Timothy McGee and his wife sharing a meal with LaRoche and his spouse, while Torres assumes the role of an undercover hitman in order to trace a hired killer. This promises to be a thrilling narrative that fans can anticipate later on this year.
