NCIS Season 22: McGee’s Episode 19 Gibbs Dream Explained

Contains spoilers for “NCIS” Season 22, Episode 19 — “Irreconcilable Differences”

This year has been incredibly tough on Tim McGee (Sean Murray), as he’s been preoccupied with his efforts to bring down Deputy Director LaRoche (Seamus Dever). Consequently, he’s been neglecting his family, falling behind at work, and even experiencing distressing nightmares. For example, in “Irreconcilable Differences,” one of his terrifying dreams placed him in a mindset reminiscent of a significant character within the “NCIS” universe – Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon).

In Tim’s dream, he finds himself in Gibbs’ basement, acting like Gibbs might, but when someone else enters the room, Tim assumes it’s Gibbs – until he encounters LaRoche instead, who then shoots him, jolting him awake. McGee is clearly disturbed by this dream, and when he shares his frightening experience with two of his coworkers off-screen, Jessica Knight (played by Katrina Law) hypothesizes a reason for Tim’s terror. She suggests it’s a “typical fear of failure nightmare.” According to her, Tim is anxious that he won’t measure up to Gibbs’ expectations and fears that he’s botched the LaRoche investigation.

It seems that Tim isn’t the sole team member who’s had a dream related to Gibbs, but the other instance we know of is less extraordinary.

Nick admits he’s had a Gibbs-related dream

In Tim’s dream and Gibbs’ reality, there are distinct variations, yet Tim still senses Gibbs is observing him closely. For one, instead of a sailboat, a speedboat with Tim’s name is found in the basement. Also, McGee dons a USMC hoodie reminiscent of what Gibbs used to wear off-duty. Interestingly, McGee pours himself a drink that resembles the bourbon Gibbs adores, but finds it bitter when he tastes it. A postcard from Alaska, where Gibbs has settled, catches Tim’s attention. Upon examining this message from his guide, a television in the basement springs to life, revealing that McGee is being monitored by concealed cameras.

It appears that when Tim shares his dream with his friends, at least one of them seems to share a lingering unease about their past leader in a subtle manner. Later on, Nick Torres (played by Wilmer Valderrama) discloses to Jessica that he had a dream involving his superior. “He gave me an untouched pineapple colada and told me to sit up straight,” Nick explains. When she enquires about the possible meaning, he is puzzled since he’s not known for slouching.

Meanwhile, Jessica informs Nick that she’s never experienced a dream involving Gibbs. However, it seems that both Tim and Nick aren’t unique in having nocturnal visits from their former superior. “Everyone has experienced one,” Nick asserts. Although viewers might yearn to uncover the nature of Gibbs-inspired dreams for characters like Alden Parker (played by Gary Cole), this intriguing question will have to remain a mystery for now.
