Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS episode “Bad Blood” are ahead!
Last year, the “NCIS” series franchise reached its 1,000th episode with “A Thousand Yards,” which was the seventh episode from Season 21, available for streaming via a Paramount+ subscription. This episode boasted some impressive guest appearances and an intriguing connection to the very first “NCIS” episode. Additionally, it introduced Fletcher Voss, the inventor of Bandium – the app that alerts the team when they’re needed at crime scenes. Interestingly, Fletcher made a return in the recently-aired episode “Bad Blood,” but for me, the real delight was noticing the subtle references to “NCIS: Sydney” and other spinoffs within the storyline.
Why Fletcher Voss Returned To NCIS
In the case titled ‘Bad Blood’, investigators delved into the murder mystery surrounding a Navy lieutenant. This individual had been attempting to restrain Fred Sammons, a man under the influence of drugs, who had maliciously tampered with multiple blood samples at a mobile blood bank. The objective was to conceal the theft of a specific sample. That sample belonged to Lauren Hawthorn, whose scattered skeletal remains were later discovered in a barrel filled with acid at her residence.
Lauren recently joined a firm named Life Sequence, which customizes health insurance based on an individual’s DNA. It wasn’t long before it was disclosed that Fletcher Voss, the company’s founder, had earned his wealth from the sale of Bandium, and he spent just three months in prison for his unintentional part in the attempt to assassinate Director Leon Vance. Additionally, it was discovered that he had been romantically involved with Lauren, and she was carrying their child before her untimely death.
More NCIS Coverage

Actor Rocky Carroll has starred on NCIS for more than fifteen years, and he discusses what keeps him enthusiastic about maintaining that remarkable run.
Actress Pauley Perrette openly discusses the challenges she faced during her time on NCIS, revealing some tough behind-the-scenes facts. She also explains why a guest appearance on The Big Bang Theory didn’t materialize due to demanding circumstances.
At first, it seemed like Fletcher might have murdered Lauren because his divorce was ongoing, and if his ex-wife discovered Lauren was pregnant, it could jeopardize his $20 million settlement. However, it turned out that Fletcher wasn’t aware of the pregnancy until Alden Parker informed him. Interestingly, just moments after this revelation, Fletcher suffered a hemorrhagic stroke caused by trace amounts of warfarin, a blood thinner, which had been surreptitiously added to the six smoothies he drank daily.
Initially suspected of poisoning Fletcher Voss due to her role as one of the founding figures in Life Sequence, it was later uncovered that Holly had sold the rights to the company to Fletcher, a transaction that ultimately proved unfavorable for her. The contract stipulated that should Fletcher pass away, she would regain control of Life Sequence. However, she found no appeal in this scenario as it became clear that nothing within the company was functioning properly.
It was Life Sequence’s top doctor, Donovan, who turned out to be the real villain in this story. His name appeared on all the research studies they had conducted. Once Life Sequence’s project became active, it would have exposed him as a fraud, so he decided to poison Fletcher instead. Unfortunately, Lauren also consumed some of Voss’ smoothies, and the warfarin combined poorly with her medication, causing her death. To cover his tracks, Donovan attempted to eliminate all evidence of Lauren, including dissolving her body in acid and stealing her blood sample. However, as is often the case on NCIS, Donovan was eventually apprehended. On a positive note, Voss’ life was spared when he received a blood transfusion from Timothy McGee, who happens to be a universal donor.
Other NCIS Offices Got In On McGee’s Fundraiser
During the course of this investigation, McGee was simultaneously organizing a coffee sale within the office for a fundraiser at his children’s school. He managed to generate quite a buzz, but Kasie Hines suggested an innovative approach: selling the coffee to other NCIS offices. The more funds they accumulated, the higher were McGee’s chances of outperforming Brendan Banks, a fellow parent who traditionally topped the charts in such school fundraisers.
In the episode titled “Bad Blood”, Kasie made the first mention of NCIS: Sydney within the NCIS universe, by selling 20 bags of coffee to a woman named Michelle who worked at the Sydney office. This was a nod to Olivia Swann’s character, Michelle Mackey. Furthermore, in a more subtle connection, Kasie displayed a whiteboard tracking her coffee sales, which included names such as Kensi Blye and G. Caleb from NCIS: Los Angeles, Dwayne Pride from NCIS: New Orleans, and Jane Tennant and Ernie Malick from NCIS: Hawai’i. This was the most apparent link to the broader NCIS-verse that could be found in this episode.
It’s refreshing to see the original NCIS series acknowledge other spin-offs, whether they ended gracefully or were unexpectedly canceled like Hawaii. It would be great if some characters from those shows made a guest appearance to update us on their current lives, but I’ll settle for what’s given. Of course, NCIS: Origins was excluded from this tribute since it’s a prequel set in the ’90s.
The latest installments of ‘NCIS’ are broadcast every Monday at 9 pm Eastern Time on CBS. For the upcoming TV season, you can expect the return of ‘NCIS’, ‘Sydney’, and ‘Origins’. Additionally, ‘NCIS: Tony & Ziva’, a new series on Paramount+, is scheduled to debut sometime this year.
