Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS: Sydney Season 2 premiere are ahead!
The second season of the TV series NCIS: Sydney has commenced on the 2025 television schedule, and you can catch it live in the U.S. on CBS or stream it with your Paramount+ subscription. In the Season 2 opener, titled “Heart Starter,” we learned that Michelle Mackey has a son who is about to graduate high school, and it shed some light on the mystery introduced in the Season 1 finale regarding the kidnapping of JD’s son. Although we didn’t find out who the mastermind behind the scenes is by the end of this episode, Sydney showrunner Morgan O’Neill hinted that the appearance of this character will be linked to Mackey’s court martial before the series began, and they will reveal themselves at a later point in the storyline.
When NCIS: Sydney Season 2 Will Reveal This Big Bad
In the finale of NCIS: Sydney’s first season titled “Heart Starter,” it was shown that Colonel Richard Rankin had been blackmailed rather than willingly involved in the villainous activities. This became clear when he began bleeding from his heart while trying to write something for Mackey and the team, revealing a hidden device in his pacemaker. During an interview, Morgan O’Neill hinted that this plotline might not be fully resolved by the end of Season 2, but could potentially carry over into a potential third season.
In the opening episode of this season, minute 3 introduces a major twist that drastically alters the course of NCIS, taking us on an intense, unexpected journey. As the season progresses, events from earlier in Season 1 begin to unfold as a complex mystery, unraveling at an increasing pace. By the end of Season 2, key aspects about our antagonist become more apparent, culminating in direct encounters in episodes 9 and 10. The first season’s enigmatic storylines and conspiracies reach their conclusion by the finale of Season 2, offering resolution and leaving me eager for viewers to experience it themselves. I don’t think anyone could have predicted this outcome.
I’m thrilled to share that Colonel Rankin survived until the end of “Heart Starter,” but unfortunately, he slipped into a coma. Despite public reports of his demise, it appears he’s being kept at an unspecified medical facility now. So, we fans can only cross our fingers and wish for Rankin to regain consciousness so he can provide some much-needed answers. As per O’Neill’s statement, it seems this might happen towards the end of Season 2, which could potentially bring the enigmatic villain out into the open.
How Michelle Mackey’s Court Martial Ties Into This NCIS: Sydney Storyline
Initially, when NCIS: Sydney fans were introduced to Michelle Mackey, they discovered she’d been court-martialed while serving as a Marine Corps helicopter pilot. However, she was declared not guilty. The episode “Ghosted” disclosed that during her service in Khost, Afghanistan, Mackey, along with a gunner and a corpsman, took a chopper to rescue three soldiers who had strayed from the base but ended up in enemy territory. The three soldiers survived, but those who accompanied Mackey did not. Despite “Ghosted” leaving the reason for Mackey’s acquittal unclear, I posed the question about further explanation to Morgan O’Neill, and here is his response regarding whether more answers will be revealed:
From your analysis, it seems that Season 2 has some unresolved mysteries and potential threats from earlier episodes that are gradually becoming more apparent, hinting at a larger, overarching plotline. Recall, when Mackey first met Colonel Rankin in Season 1’s premiere, Rankin mentioned some questionable aspects of Mackey’s past and alluded to people who wanted him buried. These characters have not disappeared, and their influence throughout the season is growing subtly, contributing significantly to the rise of the main antagonist.
It seems as though there might be a link between the villain and Mackey’s court martial, potentially indicating someone influential within the U.S. government. However, whether this is true or not remains to be seen. Olivia Swann’s character is facing a challenging phase in her life, but it appears she won’t let go of this difficult period easily. Those who seek retribution for her actions may reappear, and given Morgan O’Neill’s hint that more questions will arise, I wouldn’t be shocked if this storyline carries over into Season 3 of Sydney, assuming it gets renewed.
On Fridays at 8 pm Eastern Time, you can catch the latest episodes of NCIS: Sydney on CBS. Don’t forget to visit TopMob regularly for updates about the show, along with NCIS, NCIS: Origins, and the upcoming Paramount+ exclusive series NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
