As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, stepping into the real-life photographic universe of Neal Santos feels like a breath of fresh air. Having grown up in the bustling heart of New York City, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the vibrant, diverse tapestry that is this city.
As a devoted New Yorker and photographer, I’m proudly showcasing my love for the city that shaped me by releasing a new photography book, aptly named “The Ultimate Bodega“. This book delves into the heart of New York City’s cultural heritage, offering a poignant glimpse into the once-thriving communities that have been overshadowed by time. Each photograph in this collection serves as a time capsule, preserving moments that might otherwise be forgotten
In “The Ultimate Bodega”, Santos captures on camera the vibrant immigrant communities that have been a part of his life since his childhood. From children wandering into bodegas, to local workers and coffee drinkers lounging on the streets, he documents their daily lives. Reflecting on his work, Santos notes, “We are all photographers these days, always with phones in hand. I’m no exception. Over the years, Nokia, Blackberry, and various iPhones have been used to snap these images. It astounds me that they’ve survived until now. I don’t hoard things, not even JPEGs. These photos were taken spontaneously, and that was as far as I intended it to go.”
