Need to Recharge After AFM? Discover the Other Las Vegas With These Tips

As a seasoned traveler with a penchant for off-the-beaten-path adventures, I must confess that my latest journey to Las Vegas has left me utterly spellbound. The city, once synonymous with neon lights and high-stakes gambling, has morphed into a cultural oasis that seamlessly blends the glitz of the Strip with the raw beauty of its surrounding landscapes.

Spectacular, lively casinos offering grand suites, lavish nightclubs filled with revelers, and elaborate theaters showcasing renowned entertainers are what make Las Vegas a globally recognized tourist hotspot. However, driving west on Charleston Boulevard at dawn, gazing at the breathtaking Red Rock mountains in the distance, stirs the thought that there’s much more to explore. It’s not just about nature, though. The last ten years have seen an influx of creative minds, high-class individuals, and business pioneers from major cities, drawn to Las Vegas by the promise of a superior lifestyle with easier access to the finest offerings.

The journey commences with the breathtaking landscapes encompassing the Las Vegas Valley: vast expanses of untouched natural beauty, boasting the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area to its west and the eastern border graced by the Lake Mead Recreation Area managed by the National Park Service. The influx of visitors to these parks – approximately 3 million annually at Red Rock and nearly 6 million at Lake Mead – suggests a growing interest among travelers to discover an alternate, more natural side of Las Vegas.

From being a distant location, Red Rock is now just a quick 20-minute drive from Las Vegas’ bustling Strip. This makes it an excellent choice for those looking for a scenic drive that lasts approximately 30 minutes, following a one-way loop designed to showcase the stunning red rock formations banded with limestone. For those seeking more adventure, there are hiking trails suitable for all skill levels. One such trail is the Calico Tanks hike, which boasts a beautiful natural water collection area and offers breathtaking views of the city upon reaching its summit.

Just beyond the city pulse and approximately 45 minutes from the vibrant Strip, lies the expansive and varied terrain of the Lake Mead Recreation Area, stretching over 1.5 million acres and venturing into Arizona. Embark on a picturesque journey along Lakeshore Road and Northshore Road to savor views of the magnificent Redstone ranges, or take a refreshing dip in either Rogers or Blue Point Hot Springs. For hiking enthusiasts new to the trail, I’d recommend the Historic Railroad Trail, which commences from the Lake Mead Visitors Center and leads to Hoover Dam. The relatively flat path takes you through old railroad tunnels about a mile into your adventure.

Just a short drive from both Lake Mead (approximately 15 minutes away) and the Strip (around 30 minutes), the charming town of Boulder City offers an authentic taste of small-town desert living. Often referred to as the entry point for Hoover Dam, Boulder City is a unique half-day escape from the bustling Strip. Some quirky spots to check out include Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum, filled with props from horror movies, and Sherman’s House of Antiques, where you can find vintage jewelry and clothing. Golf enthusiasts will love playing a round at the picturesque Cascata Golf Club. Foodies won’t want to miss breakfast at the Coffee Cup Cafe, burgers at The Dillinger, local beers at Beer Zombies, and wine and tapas at Casa Don Quixote.

If you’re not interested in hiking, walking, or golfing, let the local culinary scene guide your way around town. These days, off-strip dining options are stealing the spotlight, with Strip chefs venturing west and north to branch out on their own. The Spring Mountain Road area, often referred to as Chinatown (though not all the restaurants are Chinese), boasts an impressive assortment of casual and creative eateries and bars like EDO, Partage, Sparrow and Wolf, Golden Tiki, Shanghai Taste, Raku, and several others.

Make your way to the vibrant 18b Arts District uptown, where you’ll find an array of quirky shops, art galleries, eateries, breweries, and cocktail lounges. Be sure to check out Esther’s Kitchen, Main Street Provisions, Good Pie, SoulBelly BBQ for dining options; Akin Cooperative, The Good Wolf Lifestyle Co., and Sin Amor Studio for shopping experiences; and Velveteen Rabbit, Rebar, Horse Trailer Hideout, and Garagiste for nightlife.
