Initially recognized for producing small-scale horror films, A24 took a risk by collaborating with Alex Garland on a large-scale production titled “Civil War“.
Though the film is highly respected by cinema enthusiasts, someone believes that it could serve as a fantastic foundation for a video game.
Neil Druckmann on Civil War
During a recent conversation on the show “Creator to Creator,” Druckmann shares that he was inspired by Garland’s work, particularly “Civil War.” He expresses his belief that this could make a fantastic foundation for a video game.
…”That sensation I got when I watched Civil War. It’s a movie where I found myself thinking, ‘This would make an exceptional video game!’ The concept of being a photographer, traversing the country, and venturing into peril, yet there’s something comfortingly strange about this adventure.
Indeed, as far as I’m aware, no one has yet endeavored to transform the “Civil War” into a game, but the film presents a captivating universe brimming with unanswered questions.
Notably, the movie features Nick Offerman, known for portraying Bill in the TV series ‘The Last of Us’, and who worked together with Garland on their series ‘Devs’.
What’s Civil War about?
In simpler terms, the 2024 film titled “Civil War” narrates the journey of photojournalists and reporters traveling across a devastated United States during wartime. The star-studded cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, and Wagner Moura.
Instead of presenting as a typical “Red vs. Blue” film, “Civil War” offers an unexpected lack of clarity regarding the reasons behind the conflict. In essence, it seems to be influenced by conflicts in other nations and transposes the scenario to the United States, exploring hypothetical reactions among U.S. citizens during a contemporary civil war.
The main idea portrayed in this movie revolves around the profession of journalism, emphasizing its significance in unveiling truth, but also warning about its ability to distort reality through sensationalization. Furthermore, it sheds light on the roles of journalists and the dangerous situations they often find themselves in while pursuing their work.
Similar to “The Last of Us,” “Civil War” is set in a world that has been drastically altered from what we know. Transforming the narrative style of “TLOU” into something like “Civil War” could be relatively straightforward, given its cross-country setting and the requirement to place characters in peril.
What’s Druckmann Working on Now?

It’s likely that Druckmann doesn’t have the time for a game based on the Civil War, given that Naughty Dog is preparing to debut a new franchise called “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
As a gamer, I’m excited about the upcoming game, but there’s not much info available yet. However, in an interview, Druckmann hinted that Faith and Religion will be central themes in the story. Furthermore, since The Last of Us is all about connections, Druckmann aims to make us feel profound isolation and loneliness as we delve into this new game.
Sounds like a trip.
The scheduled launch date for “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet” remains undetermined, however, enthusiasts are optimistic that it might debut on PlayStation 5 by the end of this year.
