In celebration of Fortnite, CRKD has unveiled an updated version of their NEO S controller – the NEO S Purple Wave Edition. Just like its predecessors in the series, it retains the same design and button configuration. The device is packaged in a robust cardboard box adorned with a stylish slipcover for a stunning presentation.
Unboxing the NEO S Purple Wave Edition
Upon removing the slipcase and opening the box, you’ll see the Purple Wave controller kept snug and secure by surrounding cardboard. Also in the box are instructions, a USB-C charging cord, and a cheat sheet with instructions for setting up the festival attachment and pairing it your PC and Nintendo Switch.
Shaped like a rectangle but boasting curved edges, the Purple Wave embraces its moniker through intricate, wavy lines of violet and dark purple adorning its front facade. This gadget adheres to the Xbox button design with the left joystick placed above the directional pad and the right joystick situated below the X, Y, A, and B buttons.
Among the left joystick, the X, Y, A, and B buttons, there’s a black home button located. Slightly beneath it, you’ll spot three tiny purple buttons labeled view, share, and menu. Beneath these smaller buttons, the phrase “Fortnite Festival” is written in boxy, white letters.
The NEO S Purple Wave Works with PC and Switch
Bright pink trigger buttons adorn the top corners with a USB-C port between them. Another set of triggers is found on its backside. Unlike other NEO S controllers, the Purple Wave comes with a festival attachment that adds five semi-oval buttons to the bottom of the controller.
The controller is compatible with PC, iOS, Android and Nintendo Switch and CRKD makes pairing to any of them a breeze. Just hold down home or home and up on the d-pad (depending on the type of device you wish to connect to) for three seconds and the NEO S will appear under available devices.
Download the CRKD App
You can remap buttons and customize sensitivity and rumble via the CRKD app. After downloading the app to your phone, just tap the company logo on the back of your new controller to register it. Upon registration, you’ll learn the rarity rank of your specific controller – Silver, Diamond, or CRKD.
The level of rarity for your device is determined by its unique product number. However, this doesn’t impact how you operate your controller. Still, the excitement of unveiling it is palpable. Once registered, you can utilize the app to activate No Dead Zone mode, enhancing joystick sensitivity and responsiveness.
You have the option to reassign any button, even those on the festival accessory, from the Button menu, and adjust the level of vibration under Rumble. Customizing your buttons, triggers, joysticks, and rumble lets you find the perfect setup for your gaming style.
Gaming on the NEO S Purple Wave Edition
While the rectangular design may seem counterintuitive at first glance, the rounded corners and flared LT/RT triggers make it comfortable to hold during long gaming sessions. Though on the small side, the joysticks are sturdy and responsive, and the buttons are well-spaced letting you easily press the correct one each time without looking down.
In my gaming experience on my iPad using Steam Link, the controls, while having a delicate feel, proved to be surprisingly robust. I encountered minimal issues when destroying enemy spaceships in Starfield, and the NEO S Purple Wave controller seldom failed me whether I was battling cute monsters in Cassette Beasts or venturing through grimy sewers in Evoland 2. Occasionally, my thumbs slipped off the Hall Effect joysticks during intense gaming sessions.
With The Purple Wave, you can keep up with challenging multiplayer games such as Star Wars Hunters and Disney Speedstorm. The swift triggers enable me to dish out a heap of trouble for opponents in Star Wars Hunters, while the accurate joysticks help me leave my adversaries trailing behind in Disney Speedstorm.
The NEO S Purple Wave Edition’s Festival Attachment
The NEO S Purple Wave Edition boasts a lightweight, comfortable design, making it perfect for gaming sessions on-the-go. Constructed from durable plastic, this controller ensures smooth controls and robust battery performance. Its appealing style, enhanced by customization options via the CRKD companion app, gives the NEO S Purple Wave Edition an edge in the gaming world.
