  • Match-3 game with a lot of juice and different quests
  • Many callbacks to Neopets and Neopet lore

As a seasoned Neopian from the future year 2024, I’ve seen it all – from battling Martezians to raising my beloved Lupee Lou. When I heard about Neopets: Faerie Fragments, I was skeptical after the disappointment of Faerieland Hope. But boy, did they step up their game! It’s like playing a classic match-3 with a side of nostalgia and a sprinkle of my beloved Neopian lore.

In 2024, being an ardent Neopets enthusiast, I had already tried their match-3 game titled Faeries Hope. However, it didn’t seem fully polished or satisfying to me. When Neopets: Faerie Fragments was released, my expectations were high, as I was eager to explore this new version, aiming to collect all the Neopets items available via their crossplay feature.

In essence, the game revolves around a timeless match-3 puzzle format, yet it’s uniquely set within the realm of Neopets. The game unfolds post the downfall of Faerieland, on a tiny floating isle in the skies. For years, a fairy has slumbered there until another fairy breaks through their roof and finds them! In this tale, you assume the role of the now-awakened fairy, and the narrative unfolds as to why you must gather resources to enhance your celestial isle.

This tidbit of information is deeply rooted in the universe of Neopets, filled with references to games on the site, familiar fairies, and in-game events. It’s rich with hidden moments and Easter eggs for those acquainted with Neopets. I’ve even managed to obtain petpets that I had in the game previously, which adds a fun layer of nostalgia.

But what about the gameplay?

I don’t think I have ever been good at talking about match-3-style games. They all feel very much the same; this one has power-ups, a variety of different ways to complete levels, and a fairy friend that can help you with their power.

Initially, the levels are quite straightforward, but soon you’ll encounter challenges where you must pair items next to boxes to burst them, letters to unlock them, or Neopet fish tanks by matching characters of the same color. The power-ups are satisfying, and they all function smoothly. It’s a well-crafted and delightful match-3 game.

In Neopets: Faerie Fragments, your fairy companion can prove incredibly useful. They gain energy by aligning characters of their preferred color on the board, and using them doesn’t consume a turn. What’s more, they usually possess a potent ability that clears the game board. You can also personalize these friends with various outfits you can buy, making it an enjoyable experience. As you progress through the story, you’ll encounter several distinct friends to unlock.

There is a lot going on in this game; limited-time events have you challenging other players to get a number of levels done on your first try. I found a second area within the game that takes you to a new, forest-like location. At the time of launch, some of the graphics seem to be missing and there isn’t a story yet, but there are a bunch of new levels that you can work through here to slowly solve quests.

If you don’t pass a stage, you have the option to spend some currency for additional attempts or you might lose a chance to continue. These chances can gradually increase over time. You earn three different types of currencies while playing: one for purchasing power-ups, lives, and other items; another exclusively for customizing your character’s clothing; and a third that you receive upon completing each level, which can be used to upgrade your world and uncover more of the storyline.
