Netflix may have saved comedy from the woke mob.
Sound hyperbolic?
Discuss the narrow escape Dave Chappelle had from being criticized by the group known as ‘Cancel Culture’, due to his stand-up special “The Closer” which contained jokes targeting the transgender community in 2021.
After the death of George Floyd in 2020, which marked the pinnacle of the “woke” movement’s cultural influence, both the Left and traditional media launched a criticisms campaign against Chappelle.
At that point, Chapelle was undeniably the most prominent comedian. Should something happen to him, who would step up next? On a deeper note, which comedian wouldn’t consider self-censorship to prevent a similar predicament?
Netflix might have removed “The Closer” from its digital library and issued an apologetic statement in a “hostage-like” manner.
“We will be an ally moving forward … blah, blah blah.”
Nope.
If you struggle with our wide variety of content, Netflix might not suit your preferences optimally, as stated by co-CEO Ted Sarandos during a heated discussion.
After that point, Netflix managed to secure agreements with unconventional comedians such as Tim Dillon, Shane Gillis, and Matt Rife.
Currently, Netflix is collaborating with the comedian who almost derailed Donald Trump’s presidential bid towards the end of last year. However, this partnership might not hold much weight with the public if trust in traditional media remains low.
At Donald Trump’s October 27th event at Madison Square Garden, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s humorous act took center stage in media discussions. In a jovial manner, he made light of Puerto Rico by suggesting it was similar to waste, alluding to the country’s struggles with handling garbage.
Mainstream media quickly grabbed hold of the joke, hoping it might strain Trump’s relationship with Hispanic voters.
It didn’t. Nor did Hinchcliffe’s career take a hit from the incident. He only got more famous.
Here’s the proof.
Netflix has recently sealed a comprehensive agreement with the comedian for him to present his “Kill Tony” podcast to viewers. Remarkably, this unconventional program managed to sell out the iconic Madison Square Garden last year.
Still, many people remain unaware of “Kill Tony.” That’s about to change, according to Variety.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that three unique comedy specials from the hilarious Tony Hinchcliffe are set to premiere on our favorite streaming platform! The first one, a side-splitting performance captured at Comedy Mothership in Austin, is all set to hit our screens on April 7th. Can’t wait!
In “Kill Tony,” Hinchcliffe randomly selects names from a container, allowing those chosen to deliver stand-up comedy for an entire minute. The program appeals to both seasoned comics and beginners, and there are no restrictions on the type of jokes shared during the show.
Woke scolds aren’t invited. Hinchliffe hinted as much in his statement on the Netflix deal.
This show is incredibly free-flowing and unscripted, offering an unprecedented level of creative liberty. The fact that Netflix allows us to maintain the show’s raw essence is like a comedian’s ideal scenario, and we’re thrilled about the prospect of enjoying our own series on Netflix.
Avoid any attempts to disrupt the agreement, like those seen in cancel culture. After Netflix firmly defended Chappelle, the progressive left seemed to back off.
Since then, we haven’t seen any significant attacks on Netflix programming.
The major streaming service is again demonstrating its commitment to free expression by welcoming comedians back onto its platform, having experienced the advantages this approach brings.
