As an old-time movie buff who’s seen more samurai flicks than I can count on my fingers (and toes), I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the news that Blue Eye Samurai is coming back for another round! This ain’t just any ordinary anime series, mind you. It’s got the perfect blend of action, drama, and historical accuracy that makes it stand out from the crowd.
Last year towards the end, it was announced that the popular Netflix anime Blue Eye Samurai would be coming back for a second season. In an interview with Comicbook.com, the team responsible for the series shared some encouraging news about Season 2, suggesting that they are currently in the process of creating new episodes. Amber Noizumi, one of the writers, confirmed this by simply saying, “We’re working on it.”
As Noizumi remained secretive, Executive Producer and Director Michael Green shared additional details, hinting at “even more of the extraordinary.”
“We’re thrilled with its progress; it’s shaping up wonderfully. Our team is performing exceptionally well, leveraging their skills and expertise to achieve the seemingly impossible once more – and even pushing beyond that! We’re also celebrating our strengths, perfecting what we do best, and daring to try some truly innovative, groundbreaking ideas as well.”
17th-century Japan during the Edo period serves as the backdrop for “Blue Eye Samurai“, where we follow Maya Erskine’s character, Mizu, a biracial, blue-eyed female samurai. Haunted by her past and shunned in Edo-period society, she is determined to seek vengeance against those who wronged her. As a young warrior, she carves a violent path towards her preordained fate. At this time, specifics about what “Blue Eye Samurai” Season 2 will entail are kept secret.
The actress Maya Erskine, known for PEN15, is joined by a diverse group of talented individuals including George Takei from Star Trek, Masi Oka from Heroes, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa from Mortal Kombat, Brenda Song from Dollface, Darren Barnet from Never Have I Ever, Randall Park from WandaVision, and Kenneth Branagh from Oppenheimer. This impressive cast also includes Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All at Once, Ming-Na Wen from Mulan, Harry Shum Jr. from Crazy Rich Asians, and Mark Dacascos from John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, among others.
Blue Eye Samurai Was Met With Critical Acclaim
Last year towards its conclusion, it was officially confirmed that Blue Eye Samurai would return for Season 2. This exciting news was shared by Netflix, who announced that the creators and writers of the anime series, the husband-and-wife duo Michael Green and Amber Noizumi, were already working on new episodes. In their statement, they hinted that the character Mizu has more bloodshed yet to come!
As a cinema enthusiast, I embarked on this extraordinary project with a pledge to recreate this deeply intimate tale set in Edo-period Japan in a way that resonates authentically and breathtakingly. Our team of animators, historians, musicians, martial artists, and voice actors brought this vision to life exceeding our wildest dreams. We owe a debt of gratitude to each member of our dedicated crew and the worldwide audience who have shown such ardor for Mizu’s quest for vengeance. The journey is far from over for Mizu, as there’s more blood to be shed! We extend heartfelt thanks to our esteemed partners at Netflix for allowing this adventure to continue.
Upon its debut, the anime series garnered an extraordinarily favorable reception, boasting a nearly flawless 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a popular review aggregator site. MovieWeb’s Adam Symchuk highly recommends it as “the revenge tale you shouldn’t miss.”
“Portraying both aggression and sensuality offers an authentic reflection of the era’s possible cruelty and inequalities. This aspect significantly attracts viewers to the animated series, and the power of these scenes lies in their skillful narrative of revenge. It is evident that Mizu’s retaliation against adversaries provides a sense of relief, but the lead-up guarantees it’s not just mindless violence.”
