Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos Says AI Will “Generate a Great Set of Creator Tools”

As a seasoned gamer and tech enthusiast, I’ve seen the evolution of technology in various industries, from animation to film and television production. The latest buzz is about artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI taking over creative fields, including Netflix’s TV and film content.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO, isn’t certain how artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI will affect movies and TV shows on their platform yet. However, he thinks these technologies could offer valuable resources for content creators.

During Netflix’s earnings call on Thursday, executives were questioned about the possibility of integrating generative AI into the platform and its potential effects on content discovery and the media itself. In response, Sarandos referred to the advancements in technology observed in the animation industry. Once dominated by hand-drawn art, it has since transitioned to computer-generated imagery (CGI).

He pointed out that despite advancements leading to more advanced animations, the costs haven’t decreased and the industry has seen an increase in job opportunities, contrasting concerns about automation and artists being supplanted by artificial intelligence.

“According to Sarandos, I believe AI will provide an excellent assortment of creative tools for storytellers, enhancing their abilities. Over the past century, it’s clear that advanced technology and captivating entertainment have collaborated to create thriving industries.”

Many filmmakers and producers are currently exploring the use of AI in their work. They’re eagerly discovering its potential benefits, but it’s too early to determine the exact implications for everyone involved. Regardless, our primary objective continues to be creating compelling narratives.

He added that audiences care most about quality rather than technology when viewing content.

He believed that the success of shows and films lies in their ability to forge a connection with the audience. It’s not just about the quality of writing or the actors’ chemistry, but also the unexpected twists and turns in the plot. While audiences may be aware of other aspects, they are primarily concerned with being moved by the storytelling. Budgets and technology, in his opinion, hold less significance.

Netflix’s co-CEO Greg Peters shared that the company has employed related technologies for quite some time to boost user interaction. He further expressed optimism that advanced AI, specifically generative AI, could enhance their efforts in this area.

“Netflix’s co-CEO, Greg Peters, believes generative AI has great possibilities to enhance our recommendation and discovery services even more. He aims to make it simpler for users to discover a captivating story tailored to their current preferences.”
