Netflix Dates Ellen DeGeneres’ Final Standup Special

As a long-time fan of Ellen DeGeneres, I must say that her upcoming standup special, “Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval,” feels like the perfect finale to an extraordinary career. The woman who once made us laugh through the mundane and the absurd has faced some harsh realities in recent years, yet she’s managed to rise above it all with grace and humor.

Ellen DeGeneres’ upcoming stand-up comedy special on Netflix has been officially scheduled, with Ellen herself confirming that it will mark the end of her professional stand-up career.

Ellen DeGeneres’ upcoming comedy special titled “Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval” will debut worldwide on September 24. This follows her previous special “Relatable“, released in 2018, which was her first in 15 years on the service. The deal for the two-special release was quite expensive. For this new hour, industry hotshot Ben Winston and his production company Fulwell 73 are producing, along with DeGeneres herself and her wife Portia de Rossi. Joel Gallen, who directed Chris Rock’s 2023 special “Selective Outrage“, is the director for this project as well.

Initially, when DeGeneres revealed her upcoming hour-long show, she playfully addressed the questions on everyone’s minds: “Indeed, I will discuss it. Indeed, this is my final special. Indeed, Portia is just as beautiful in person as she appears on screen.”

The issue she had referenced – the allegations about a toxic work environment that surfaced in the summer of 2020, following a string of personal criticisms which DeGeneres stated “devastated” her – played a role in the events that eventually led to the termination of key executives at the long-running talk show. However, despite this, Ellen DeGeneres has maintained that these issues were not the primary reason for ending the show after 19 seasons. As she explained to THR in 2021, “The show was affected by it. It was painful for me. Extremely so. But if I was leaving the show because of that, I wouldn’t have returned this season. So, it’s not why I’m stepping down, but it was difficult.”

At the break of a new day, Ellen DeGeneres is anticipated to open up, sharing insights into her recent activities since she referred to herself as being “expelled from show business.” Netflix’s tagline for this fresh stage emphasizes a journey that ranges from the ordinary chores of chicken-rearing and parallel parking to grappling with the intense world of stardom. She delves deep into her stand-up beginnings, infusing humor into life’s most authentic and peculiar situations. This content has been the main attraction during her “Ellen’s Last Stand… Up” tour across multiple cities, where she created a stir by joking about the controversy before abruptly halting performances.

Despite the ongoing debates, securing a spot on The Ellen DeGeneres Show remains a significant achievement within comedy communities, and currently, the demand for comedy specials is at an all-time high. In fact, with streaming platforms like Hulu entering the fray, ready to pay up to eight figures for select comedians, it’s becoming a beacon of hope in an otherwise challenging entertainment industry. As a comedy enthusiast, this trend excites me!
