Netflix Is Making a Sequel to Its Unexpected Hit Shark Thriller Under Paris

As someone who has spent countless hours under the vast, mysterious depths of the ocean, I can confidently say that Under Paris was not just another shark movie; it was a thrilling dive into the unknown. The first film left us hanging with its shocking cliffhanger, and now, the announcement of Under Paris 2 has me absolutely giddy with anticipation!

The following article contains spoilers for Under Paris.

The highly-anticipated sequel to the Netflix original film that caused a stir when it was released in June this year has been confirmed. Although Netflix hasn’t officially announced it yet, star Bérénice Bejo has shared that she plans to start filming “Under Paris 2” soon, as reported by What’s on Netflix. According to Bejo’s interview with La Tribune, production for the sequel is set to begin next year.

By September 2025, we’ll be producing “Under Paris 2”, a film that’s not just a typical sequel. Instead, it’s a unique cinematic experience, distinct from its predecessor… yet featuring a shark once more.

In the novel titled “Under Paris“, marine biologist and researcher Sophia Assalas experiences a tragic event when her husband and crew are killed during a diving operation gone wrong, where a monstrous shark turned violent and attacked the team mercilessly. Now employed at an aquarium in Paris, Sophia is presented with an opportunity to assist with Lilith, the shark responsible for the attack. The location of Lilith is indicated by her beacon, which places her within the River Seine, a waterway flowing through the heart of Paris. As time progresses, however, Sophia uncovers secrets suggesting that things may not be as they appear, and she might be dealing with a more intelligent creature than initially thought.

Information on the forthcoming sequel is limited, as Bejo was tight-lipped about its plot details. Nevertheless, director Xavier Gens had previously hinted at his intended approach if the sequel were to be approved, based on statements he made some months ago.

“If there is a sequel, it will take place in a Paris that is entirely submerged underwater.”

The second installment of “Gens” hints at confrontations stemming from the finale of “Under Paris”. To refresh our memories, in the climax of “Under Paris”, Lilith and a horde of sea monsters devastate the city following their consumption of swimmers during the Paris Triathlon. Eventually, Sophia and her fellow survivor, Adil, revive from the attack to discover that Paris is now submerged underwater. The closing scenes also suggest that Lilith’s offspring are now swimming in significant rivers in cities such as New York, London, and Tokyo. In terms of sequel material, there’s no better foundation than the way “Under Paris” concludes.

Upon my arrival at the streaming platform on June 5, 2024, Under Paris swiftly soared to become one of the year’s most-watched films, amassing a staggering 84 million views in its first week alone – with half of those initial views. The movie’s captivating allure kept it firmly entrenched within Netflix’s Top 10 for quite some time, which undeniably sparked discussions about a sequel almost immediately. To add to the excitement, renowned author Stephen King shared his praiseworthy review of the film, further propelling its success and popularity.

Beneath Paris isn’t just one of Netflix’s most successful non-English films; it was also praised by some as one of the top shark thrillers in years, with a few even claiming it surpasses the best shark movie since Steven Spielberg released Jaws in 1975. Yet, viewers were not as captivated, awarding the film a mere 30% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
