As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for international cinema, I must say that the upcoming sequel to Troll, a Norwegian monster movie, has piqued my interest. Having traversed the globe in search of unique and captivating stories on celluloid, I can attest that this series seems to be no exception.
2022 saw something stirred in the Norwegian mountains…and it appears no lessons were learned, as plans are underway to unleash the sequel of the monster movie Troll 2, scheduled for release in 2025. The original film tells the tale of a monster resurfacing from ancient depths to cause chaos, as a Norwegian community begins to question whether their folklore tales were as fictional as they had believed. Now one of the most watched non-English movies on the streaming platform with over 103 million views, a sequel was announced at the end of last year, and we now have more information.
At the Tudum Theater in Hollywood, Netflix unveiled details about numerous significant films they have planned in the future during their first international showcase event (as reported by Deadline). Among these upcoming movies are remakes such as Japan’s revival of the film that inspired Speed, titled Bullet Train Explosion; Korea’s assassin story Mantis; a documentary focusing on Brazilian soccer prodigy Vinicius Jr.; and now, officially confirmed, the continuation of Troll 2.
Though specifics about the plot are still being kept secret, it’s been announced that director Roar Uthaug will once again take charge of the upcoming monster movie sequel, with Espen Aukan set to write the script for the project. According to reports, Sara Khorami, Jon Ketil Johnsen, Gard B. Eidsvold, Kim S. Falck-Jorgensen, Aksel Almaas, and Trond Magnum are attached to star in Troll 2.
The First ‘Troll’ Stands Tall at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes
Back in December 2022, Netflix debuted the film “Troll,” which was directed by Roar Uthaug. Known for his work on the 2018 reboot of “Tomb Raider” and other projects like “The Wave,” “Escape,” and “Cold Prey,” Uthaug led an impressive cast that includes Ine Marie Wilmann, Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, Kim Falck, Gard B. Eidsvold, Pål Richard Lunderby, Eric Vorenholt, Pål Anders Nordvi, Veronica Sinclair, and Hugo Mikal Skår. The movie received a lot of praise upon release and currently boasts a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Here’s the official synopsis for this initial installment:
Buried deep within the Dovre mountain for a millennium, a colossal being stirs to life. Wreaking havoc as it goes, this mythical creature is swiftly heading towards Norway’s capital. However, how does one halt something that was believed to only dwell in Norwegian folklore?
For quite some time, Uthaug had harbored the desire to make Troll a reality, and he shared that this concept was one that had been simmering in his mind for more than 20 years. Given such a long gestation period, it’s understandable that there has been a strong interest in creating a follow-up movie. Intriguingly, producer Kristian Strand Sinkerud hinted at potential future developments when discussing the project with What’s on Netflix.
As creators of films, our aspirations go beyond a single movie’s lifespan. We aim to craft something that resonates for more than just one film. While we harbor dreams of producing a sequel and potentially two follow-ups, these plans hinge on the audience’s reaction towards Troll.
