Despite the sad passing of judge Liam Payne, Netflix plans to proceed with the talent search show “Building the Band,” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The “Building the Band” talent competition series by Remarkable Entertainment (a division of Banijay UK) seeks to discover and create the next sensational music group, even without seeing them initially. This glossy studio production was filmed in the summer of 2024 within the United Kingdom, long before the unfortunate incident involving Payne’s death from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, which occurred in October 2024.
Prior to his untimely demise at 31 years old, Payne was a judge on the show “Building the Band,” alongside Nicole Scherzinger (of The Pussycat Dolls) and Kelly Rowland (from Destiny’s Child). The series structure involved musicians competing for a spot in a band. During rehearsals, they didn’t get to see each other until it was time for a live performance before an audience.
According to reports from Netflix, they have never officially stated that they will stop producing their competition series. However, the specifics about how the show Building the Band will incorporate Payne following his death have not been made public yet.
Despite the unfortunate passing of Scott Payne, Netflix has granted his family sufficient time and room to cope with their loss. During a special event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s vice president of nonfiction series and sports, was questioned about how the Building the Band show was addressing Payne within the series.
Behind the scenes, sources from Netflix have told The Hollywood Reporter that Riegg referred to ongoing discussions with Payne’s family, hinting at further updates to be shared soon.
As a dedicated fan, I might express it like this: “As a tribute to Payne’s departure, the producers of ‘Building the Band’ could have his fellow judges and Backstreet Boys star, AJ McLean, who hosts the competition series, pay a heartfelt opening tribute in the first episode.
Executives at Banijay UK referred media enquiries to Netflix.
