Netflix Now Developing Sequel Series to Classic Sitcom A Different World

As a devoted fan who grew up watching TV with my family during those golden years of the 80s and 90s, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia upon hearing about Netflix reviving “A Different World.” This series was more than just a sitcom; it was a beacon of representation, a reflection of our community, and a source of endless laughter in my household.

In an exclusive report by Deadline, it’s been revealed that Netflix is working on a sequel to the classic sitcom spinoff of The Cosby Show, titled “A Different World.” This new series would center around the daughter of the original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert as she attends Hillman College. The revival is being spearheaded by Felicia Pride, a writer and producer from Grey’s Anatomy, along with original producers Debbie Allen and Tom Werner.

As of now, Netflix hasn’t spoken about the report that suggests a revival of the series is still at its infantile developmental stage, with no actors having started filming yet. It remains unclear whether the original cast members will reappear in the new version, but it seems plausible that Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy might return in some form. The initial series made its premiere in September 1987 and ran for six seasons, totaling 144 episodes, before concluding in July 1993 as one of the most successful sitcoms from that decade.

The upcoming sequel is being created as a one-hour, single-camera comedy, akin to shows like “Abbott Elementary,” “Modern Family,” and “The Office.” Contrastingly, the original series was a multi-camera sitcom that was filmed with a live audience.

Originally, “A Different World” was designed to spotlight Lisa Bonet, who portrayed Denise Huxtable, the TV daughter of “The Cosby Show.” In its initial season, it followed Denise’s first year at Hillman College, a fictional historically black college/university (HBCU). However, after the first season, Bonet revealed she was pregnant, and her character was removed from the show. Instead, the narrative shifted towards Dwayne (Hardison) and Whitley (Guy), with a robust supporting cast. Later on, Bonet reappeared in “The Cosby Show” as a married woman who relocated to New York City.

Featuring Hardison and Guy in the main roles, the other actors playing Jaleesa (Dawnn Lewis), Col. Taylor (Glynn Turman), Ron (Darryl M. Bell), Kim (Charnele Brown), Freddie (Cree Summer), Vernon (Lou Myers), and Coach Oakes (Sinbad) became crucial to the show’s success. Fans believe that the series flourished as it shifted its focus, and it became one of NBC’s popular sitcoms during their iconic lineup in the 80s and 90s.

The Legacy of A Different World & the Bill Cosby Problem

“In the late 1980s, the television series ‘A Different World’ forged new paths by being set in an HBCU, which was uncommon on network TV at the time. This groundbreaking show provided opportunities to a host of aspiring actors who would later become household names, such as Marisa Tomei (a regular in the first season), Halle Berry, Blair Underwood, and Dean Cain. The series continues to resonate, with its cast recently embarking on a tour of HBCUs, discussing the show’s legacy.”

As a movie enthusiast, I’m pondering the potential impact of Bill Cosby’s sexual assault case on the upcoming revival of his series. Given that he was the creator and served as an executive consultant throughout its entire run, it’s reasonable to expect his presence may play a role.
