As a die-hard fan of Squid Game since its groundbreaking debut in 2021, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the return of this captivating series that has not only entertained me but also connected millions of viewers worldwide. The premiere of Season 2 today was a thrilling experience, and it’s heartening to know that we have one more season left in store for us – Squid Game Season 3 in 2025!
Today, Squid Game, the highly anticipated sequel, officially premiered on Netflix, releasing all seven episodes simultaneously. Now, we have some insight into the future of the globally captivating show that initially aired in 2021 and quickly became a hit on the streaming platform. It was the first Korean drama to enter the top ten weekly most-watched TV shows worldwide, and within its first 28 days, it had been viewed by over 142 million member households. To this day, Squid Game continues to be one of Netflix’s biggest successes in history.
Following the debut of Squid Game‘s second season, Netflix has confirmed that a third season is on the horizon. However, this final installment marks the conclusion of the popular series. Although it was previously known that both seasons were shot consecutively, this is the first official word from Netflix regarding its future. The announcement was made on their Tudum blog, where they also shared an emotional letter from creator Hwang Dong-hyuk (seen below). In this letter, he expresses gratitude to fans for propelling the series to unprecedented success and reveals that Squid Game Season 3 is set to premiere in 2025.
I’m absolutely thrilled to pen this note to reveal the date for Season 2 and give you a sneak peek of Season 3, our grand finale! The epic battle between realms will escalate right up until our final season, airing next year.
In other words, if Dong-hyuk’s initial ideas for the series had been carried out, we wouldn’t see Season 3 of Squid Game. Instead, he conceived Seasons 2 and 3 as a single, extended storyline. However, upon reconsideration, he found that it was too extensive for Netflix to manage. Given that Season 2 consists of only seven episodes, this underscores how significantly streaming services have transformed the television industry. In the past, producing a season with 20 or more episodes wouldn’t raise any eyebrows. Now, such extended seasons seem to be less common, particularly in Netflix’s case.
‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Is Dividing Fans and Critics
Today marks the debut of Squid Game Season 2, and to avoid spoiling it for those who haven’t seen it yet, let me say this: While professional critics have given it a high rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, fans seem less impressed with only a 53% approval. This stands in stark contrast to the overwhelming success of Season 1, which boasts a 95% rating from critics and an impressive Popcorn meter score of 84%.
Shirley Li from The Atlantic observes that the second season of Squid Game exhibits a harsher, more judgmental perspective towards the financially struggling players, whereas Graeme Guttmann of Screen Rant remarks that the extended wait for another installment was worth it. On the other hand, viewers on Rotten Tomatoes have commented that the second season lacks character growth, offers dull and foreseeable challenges, and failed to recreate the charm that made the initial release so engaging.
Just like hit shows such as Game of Thrones, Dexter, and Lost, Squid Game has sparked intense debate among viewers. Initially highly acclaimed, some series lost popularity as they continued, and it may be beneficial that Squid Game concludes with Season 3 to avoid outstaying its welcome.
