Netflix Orders Competition Series Inspired By ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’

Netflix is planning a brand-new reality show based on the timeless tale, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl.

In the show titled “The Golden Ticket“, participants will blend aspects of strategy, excitement, and societal interactions as they strive to secure a golden ticket to access a futuristic-retro chocolate factory. Once inside, they must navigate through various trials along the way.

Eureka Productions, known for shows like “The Mole,” “Dating Around,” and “TwentySomethings Austin,” is creating this series for streaming on Netflix.

The upcoming show is the initial production based on Willy Wonka’s world since Netflix obtained Dahl’s intellectual property rights in 2021. Noteworthy books by Dahl include Matilda, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach, and The BFG, to name a few. Prior to this, Netflix had not produced any film or television projects based on what is arguably his most renowned work. However, Warner Bros. released a Wonka film in 2023, which was produced before the Netflix deal.

Jeff Gaspin, Netflix’s vice president of unscripted programming, expressed his excitement about recreating The Chocolate Factory in an extraordinary way. This unique reality competition combines adventure, strategy, and social interactions, resulting in a gripping and unforeseeable experience for the viewers. For the first time, a fortunate few will no longer need to envision the experience; they’ll get to enter the factory and live it.

Previously, Netflix has found triumph in adapting intellectual properties for competition series, such as with “Squid Game: The Challenge.” However, the realm of Willy Wonka and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” presents an entirely fresh universe of IP for Netflix spectators to explore.
