After leaving Vought Industries behind, the talented writer and producer of Amazon Prime’s hit superhero satire show The Boys, Rebecca Sonnenshine, is now taking fans on a journey to an iconic small house in the prairie. With the popular superhero series reaching its end, Sonnenshine has moved on to an intriguing new challenge. Known for her contributions to The Vampire Diaries and Archive 81, this writer is reviving a beloved classic, a family-friendly TV Western for Netflix:
As reported by Variety, Netflix has given the go-ahead for a contemporary reimagining of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved book series, Little House on the Prairie. Originally a successful TV show in the 70s starring Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert, this new adaptation will be overseen by Sonnenshine, who is passionate about Wilder’s work and aims to serve both the book’s fans and those who loved the original series. Sonnenshine expressed her desire to pay tribute to both groups when speaking with the outlet.
From the age of five, I developed a profound affection for these books. They sparked my ambition to be both an author and a filmmaker. It’s a great privilege and excitement for me to now transform these tales for a fresh, worldwide audience through Netflix.
This Could Be the Perfect Time for a Family-Friendly Western
Boasting over 73 million books sold worldwide and approximately 200 episodes from its initial NBC run, the fresh interpretation of this timeless tale promises to attract many viewers. Notably, it was also one of the most-streamed shows in 2024, as reported by Variety. Among the executive producers are Joy Gorman Wettels of Joy Coalition and Trip Friendly from Friendly Family Productions, who is the son of the original series’ executive producer Ed Friendly. Additionally, Dana Fox and Susanna Fogel also serve as executive producers for this upcoming series.
This new take on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved ‘Little House’ series combines elements of personal family saga, gripping survival narrative, and exploration of the West’s origins. It provides a colorful perspective on the challenges and successes experienced by pioneers who molded the frontier.
Netflix has seen great success in their Western productions lately, particularly with the miniseries “American Primeval,” starring Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin. Given the impressive viewership figures for the new take on “Little House on the Prairie,” it seems like a logical decision to revisit this series. As it is based on real-life stories, “Little House on the Prairie” aims to tap into a market that has been neglected since the original show ended in 1983. Audiences have plenty of intense Western action and dramas, but not many family-friendly options in this genre.
Although many of Netflix’s Western productions aren’t suitable for children, their upcoming project is indeed intended for a younger audience. Jinny Howe, the vice president of drama series at Netflix, expressed their eagerness to cater to Western enthusiasts in this new endeavor.
The timeless tale ‘Little House on the Prairie’ has touched the hearts and sparked the creativity of countless readers worldwide, and we can’t wait to reintroduce its inspiring messages of hope and resilience in a modern retelling. Rebecca’s interpretation beautifully tugs at heartstrings, making it an engaging read for both newcomers and longtime admirers of this cherished novel.
As a movie critic, I’m eagerly anticipating Netflix’s upcoming Western drama, “The Abdandons.” With its focus on the untamed prairie, this production promises to solidify Netflix’s presence in the Western show market. Fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, which depict her life growing up on the American frontier, will undoubtedly be thrilled by the thoughtful showrunner who has a deep affection for the original source material at the helm of this reimagining of an American classic.
Transitioning from action-packed superhero battles to the heartwarming struggles of a family making a life on the prairie, the show’s creator, Sonnenshine, has quite the challenge ahead. But with her talent and dedication, I have no doubt that “The Abdandons” will captivate audiences and leave a lasting impact.
