Netflix Sued Over Jake Paul-Mike Tyson Livestream Failures

As a long-time cinema aficionado and Netflix subscriber for over a decade, I must say that the recent Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, I was thrilled to witness such an iconic matchup, especially since it was accessible through my beloved streaming platform. However, the technical glitches experienced by millions of viewers, including myself, during the event were nothing short of frustrating.

In simpler terms, as the old saying goes, “Such incidents make it difficult to enjoy good things.” The much-anticipated clash between influencer Jake Paul and boxer Mike Tyson, which was supposed to be a significant win for Netflix as they ventured into live sports streaming, faced several issues. Due to an overwhelming number of viewers trying to tune in, Netflix encountered multiple technical difficulties, and one disgruntled user claims he deserves compensation due to the poor quality of the live stream.

In a lawsuit filed in Florida state court, Ronald “Blue” Denton, a resident of Hillsborough County, is taking legal action against Netflix. He’s asking for an undisclosed sum in damages and aims to represent other Netflix subscribers as part of a class-action suit. This action comes due to Netflix allegedly failing to meet expectations (breach of contract) by being “inadequately prepared” for the demand generated by the Paul-Tyson fight. Denton found the livestream to be unbearable, and the lawsuit additionally accuses Netflix of misleading business practices.

During the highly anticipated fight between Iron Mike Tyson and YouTube sensation Jake Paul, I, along with millions of other Netflix subscribers, encountered some technical difficulties while streaming the event live. With a staggering 65 million concurrent streams at its peak, and a whopping 38 million from the U.S., it’s no surprise that there were some issues. However, Denton refuses to acknowledge these problems, instead filing a lawsuit claiming, “60 million Americans were eager to witness ‘Iron Mike Tyson, the Baddest Man on the Planet,’ vs. YouTube fighter Jake Paul. What they experienced was not a fight, but the best streaming event of the planet.

The Jake Paul-Mike Tyson Fight Was a Huge Success Despite the Glitches

Regarding the Paul-Tyson fight on November 15, there were approximately 108 million viewers worldwide who tuned in live, an event usually reserved for Pay-Per-View at a hefty price. However, this time, all you needed was a Netflix account or a way to bypass password sharing restrictions, making it more accessible for many. This could potentially mark a shift in how such sports events are consumed in the future. On the other hand, fans of ‘Love Is Blind’ may relate to the experience of livestreaming something eagerly awaited on Netflix – the Season 4 reunion was delayed by 19 hours before it finally premiered, leading some to speculate about possible legal issues arising from this delay, but no lawsuits have been reported yet.

Denton isn’t only voicing his own concerns; his lawsuit underscores that more than 100,000 people expressed online complaints about the technical difficulties. Moreover, he alleges that Netflix failed to serve the fans of boxing, as stated in the lawsuit: “Fans of boxing, as well as ordinary Americans eager to witness a legend potentially fight for the last time, encountered significant problems such as lack of access, streaming issues, and buffering troubles.

In Denton’s lawsuit, it’s argued that Netflix should anticipate issues like this if they plan to keep hosting live events, considering they recently announced Beyoncé’s halftime performance during their stream of the Texans-Ravens NFL game on Christmas day. If you thought boxing fans were upset about streaming problems, just wait until The BeyHive reacts if they can’t enjoy Beyoncé at her best. Netflix, you better keep a close eye on this!

On December 25th, starting at 1pm Eastern Time, Netflix will broadcast a double header of live NFL sports action, featuring the matchup between the Chiefs and the Steelers to kick things off.
