Netflix to Add NASA+ as It Launches Into Live Streaming Feeds

Can rocket launches and astronaut spacewalks help Netflix boost its live streaming ambitions?

Netflix is teaming up with NASA, America’s space agency, to broadcast live content from NASA+ starting this summer on Netflix. This partnership marks a first for Netflix in the U.S., as they will be providing NASA+ as a channel directly within their streaming platform, sourced from an external programmer.

Earlier this month, Netflix secured a significant agreement with France’s TF1 television network, enabling the addition of real-time broadcasts from their channels. While NASA+ isn’t comparable to TF1, this deal demonstrates that Netflix is willing to enter into licensing arrangements with partners capable of supplying live video content.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed that so far, Netflix’s live content has primarily been self-produced or featured as exclusive live events, focusing heavily on sports and activities related to sports.

It’s important to mention that NASA+ can be accessed without charge on NASA’s official site, and it has also partnered with Amazon Prime Video for distribution, signifying their aim for maximum reach in disseminating their content. Additionally, NASA maintains a vibrant presence on YouTube, offering live streams among other content.

Rebecca Sirmons, General Manager of NASA+, expressed that our Space Act of 1958 encourages us to share the exciting journey of space exploration with as many people as possible,” she stated. “Collectively, we’re dedicated to entering a new era of Innovation and Exploration that will motivate future generations. Whether they’re relaxing at home or on-the-go with their smartphones, everyone can be part of this exciting adventure.

In 2023, NASA will embark on an extension of its science and exploration mission, aiming to share captivating insights with a broader audience. This will include live broadcasts of rocket launches, spacewalks, coverage of missions, and real-time images of Earth from the International Space Station, along with other engaging content. Netflix and NASA are yet to reveal further details about their programming, which they will do closer to the launch date.
