Netflix Users Say They Dislike New Layout; Research Says Otherwise

Bigger — much bigger — but is it better?

Netflix is progressively updating its homepage design for users globally, as depicted in the image provided. This is the first significant overhaul of the streaming service’s layout in a decade and a half.

As a devoted fan, I’ve always appreciated the familiarity and simplicity of Netflix’s user interface. It’s been an undeniable triumph that even latecomers like Max, Peacock, Paramount+, Hulu, and Disney+ have sought to emulate or surpass. However, the question remains as to how effectively they’ve managed to do so. Nevertheless, Netflix continues to lead the pack in terms of subscribers (boasting over 300 million users globally). Now, it seems that Netflix is taking a risk by making changes to this trusted design.

To date, a significant number of users have transitioned to the upgraded homepage, initially available on LG and Samsung smart TVs. This transformation has sparked a fair amount of online critique. The revamped homepage showcases larger program thumbnails, necessitating scrolling for more choices to appear. However, it boasts an interactive design, with expanded thumbnails revealing additional details about a title (like descriptions, cast lists, and awards won) when hovered over. Moreover, this layout supports key features that Netflix considers vital for its long-term goals.

A post on the Reddit forum dedicated to Netflix began by a user expressing dissatisfaction about recent changes in the platform’s design, stating: “For years, I’ve praised Netflix for having the most user-friendly layout among all streaming services. It’s disappointing to see other platforms mimic Netflix instead of the reverse. Why is this happening? Is it enjoyable for anyone here to have fewer options displayed at once on the screen? … Instead of easily viewing a whole screen’s worth of content information, we now have to scroll endlessly. I find this new layout frustrating.

Netflix didn’t anticipate this response following their redesign, but it’s important to note that the change was based on a year of beta testing in various global markets and adjustments to user interfaces often face some online criticism (similar to YouTube, Spotify, or Instagram). However, the testing couldn’t conclusively show that the new layout increases engagement due to Netflix’s ever-changing programming. Nonetheless, more users expressed a preference for the new design compared to the old one according to their findings.

A representative commented that Netflix recognizes that modifying an interface after over a decade may cause some frustration, but “by increasing the size of our boxes, we’re providing more details immediately to aid in better decision-making. Rather than viewing 20 to 30 titles at once, you now have a quick overview of the information.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed some exciting changes in the platform – it’s not just about movies and shows anymore. Now, it’s also geared towards live events and sports! Plus, they’ve introduced a smarter search function powered by Open AI, making finding my favorite content even easier. And get this, it’s now capable of providing more personalized and real-time suggestions based on my viewing habits. It seems like the older interface was maxed out, so they’ve given it a fresh, future-focused makeover!

It wouldn’t be wise to argue with the YouTube commenters who expressed their disappointment with Netflix’s demonstration of the new interface on its demo video (for example: “Transformed my TV into a large tablet. It’s aggravating and disorienting to quickly scan for something to watch. Even with smooth transitions and an attractive design, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ‘superior'”).

If you haven’t received the updated interface from Netflix yet, don’t worry, it’ll arrive soon for all subscribers. However, older TV models may not get the full version due to performance considerations as Netflix aims to introduce new features without compromising speed. As for potential adjustments to the homepage based on subscriber feedback, time will tell, but trust that Netflix, known for its top-notch data analysis in Hollywood, follows the numbers closely.
