According to an announcement made on Thursday, Netflix has decided not to release Ezra Edelman’s documentary about Prince due to a fresh agreement with the late musician’s estate.
Through an understanding reached between The Prince Estate and Netflix, it has been decided that the estate will create and release a new documentary, drawing from exclusive materials within Prince’s archives. However, this documentary will not be made available on Netflix.
According to a report in The New York Times last September, it was claimed that Edelman’s project would accuse Prince of both physical and emotional abuse. The documentary, which is said to be around nine hours long, includes interviews with many of Prince’s former business partners, lovers, friends, and associates. Notably, Edelman gained fame for his work on the documentary O.J.: Made in America.
One of the claims made public involved interviews with former partners. Jill Jones, a past lover, described an instance where Prince physically assaulted her by slapping and punching her in the face. Another ex-partner, Susannah Melvoin, is said to have informed filmmakers that after moving in with the musician, he became controlling, monitoring her phone calls, forbidding her from leaving the house, and attempting to isolate her from her sister. In another interview, Mayte Garcia, a former spouse, reportedly remembered being left on her own following the death of their child.
Other interviews suggest that the renowned singer demonstrated a dominating personality and experienced abuse during his childhood. Contrastingly, other accounts remember the singer fondly, leading to a challenging assignment for Edelman, as he described it.
The Hollywood Reporter reached out to Edelman for comment on Thursday’s update.
In response to the report by the Times, Primary Wave Music and Prince Legacy, two entities connected to Prince’s possessions, made a statement saying: “Those entrusted with carrying out Prince’s wishes will respect his creativity and genius. We are working diligently to sort out issues regarding the documentary, ensuring that it accurately portrays his life without distorting or sensationalizing facts about him. We eagerly anticipate continuing to showcase Prince’s talents and celebrate the enduring and influential impact he had on the world.
Prior to releasing the joint statement with Netflix on Thursday, the Prince estate shared a video stating that “the vault has been opened.
