As a seasoned film critic with a penchant for romantic comedies and a soft spot for holiday-themed movies, I must admit that “Meet Me Next Christmas” has managed to warm my heart and leave me smiling long after the credits rolled. The movie beautifully captures the magic of Christmas, the allure of unexpected connections, and the power of taking a chance on love.
In the Netflix film “Meet Me Next Christmas,” I found myself in an unexpected romance with a man named James (Kofi Siriboe), who turned out to be quite different from what I had initially imagined. The story kicks off with a typical holiday-themed encounter, as my flight to New York on Christmas Eve was canceled and I was stuck at the airport lounge due to a storm. Despite the disappointing start, I hoped for a change in plans by securing one of the standby flights I had been assigned. As fate would have it, while waiting in the lounge, I crossed paths with James.
They find common ground in watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” and their mutual aspiration to visit Paris during Christmas. When James’ flight eventually departs, he suggests they meet at a Pentatonix concert on Christmas Eve if they’re both unattached by then. Although Layla enjoyed their time together, she has a boyfriend, so she hesitantly replies with “maybe.” The story continues from there, but it is uncertain who Layla ends up with – James or someone else. One thing that can be said for certain, however, is that she does not end up with Tanner (played by Brendan Morgan), the boyfriend she was with at the start of the movie.
Breaking Up with Tanner
In the novel “Meet Me Next Christmas“, by the time the following Christmas arrives, Layla finds herself single, a situation that has recently occurred. The reason for their split is that Layla catches Tanner red-handed cheating on her just three days before Christmas. Not only does she catch him in the act, but he was doing it within the confines of her own home. It seems that the maid was visiting his place at the time and he attempted to avoid her. Shocked and bewildered, Layla swiftly evicts both Tanner and his new lover from her home, effectively ending their relationship.
In contrast to the long duration of her relationship with Tanner, Layla swiftly moves on by focusing on a different endeavor: acquiring tickets for the Pentatonix concert in order to meet James at the airport. This band is her ultimate favorite and typically, she would have already secured tickets. However, this year, Tanner preferred Macklemore, and Layla obliged. With only three days left before the concert, the tickets are sold out. Layla’s friend Roxy (Tymika Tafari) suggests using Impromptu, a personal concierge service she employs at work, to help her secure the elusive tickets.
Meeting Teddy
At the Impromptu offices, Layla encounters Teddy (Devale Ellis), who acts as her concierge. Recently, Teddy has been informed by his superior that his customer service reviews are poor and he needs to impress Layla to secure a permanent position. His initial attempt to acquire tickets for Layla within the office doesn’t succeed, prompting them to venture out into the city in search of alternative sources. Although Teddy suggests Layla wait behind, she declines, choosing to accompany him throughout their quest for Pentatonix concert tickets. Despite his reservations, they embark on a series of locations, leading them on an exciting chase.
In the end, the duo spent the following day primarily getting ready for the Snow Ball, an event featuring a lip sync competition where the prize was tickets to see Pentatonix. Although they were not entirely familiar with what they should do, they managed to win over the audience after performing their number and sharing a kiss.
Who Layla Chooses
Without a doubt, the kiss carried more significance for both Layla and Teddy than either of them had anticipated. Despite not taking home the contest prize, they were eager to discuss their shared experience. However, their conversation was cut short when Teddy’s cousin, Jordy (Kalen Allen), broke in with exciting news. It turns out that Pentatonix, having followed the story through Teddy’s direct messages, had given Jordy a ticket. As part of the deal, they requested that Teddy appear as Santa at their concert. While Roxy helped Layla prepare, Jordy sent Teddy backstage for the show.
At the concert, James is already present with a dozen roses, yet Layla has lost interest because she’s made her choice – it’s Teddy she’s interested in. In a heartfelt conversation, Layla explains her feelings for Teddy instead of him. It’s peculiar that James appeared at the concert they’d arranged to meet at, but as soon as Layla goes looking for Teddy, the truth emerges: his girlfriend – not Layla – arrives to join him for the concert.
In the heart of the Pentatonix-themed home, I slide down the chimney in my Santa suit, only to surprise Layla by revealing the tux beneath and expressing my deep affection for her. Incredibly, she reciprocates her feelings right there and then, and we share a passionate kiss as Pentatonix carries on with their performance. Time will tell if our relationship will last, but for now, this Christmas, we’re an item. Don’t miss it on Netflix!
