As a seasoned viewer and critic of entertainment, I must say that this lineup is nothing short of a feast for the eyes! With a diverse array of genres, cultures, and talents, Netflix has truly outdone itself this month.
Here are some exciting upcoming projects on Netflix in December: Keira Knightley’s anticipated comeback to a significant production, Sabrina Carpenter and friends preparing us for Christmas festivities, Angelina Jolie portraying the legendary Maria Callas, Tyler Perry narrating the story of an all-women and people of color WWII Army unit, the NFL trying to establish a new streaming Christmas tradition, and finally, the return of one of the most popular TV series of the 21st century.
Following a period of relative inactivity, Keira Knightley makes her comeback as the main character in Netflix’s espionage drama titled “Black Doves,” which premieres on Dec. 5. In this production, Knightley portrays Helen Webb, who is a committed spouse and mother, a dedicated professional spy, and has entrusted her politician husband’s secrets to the Black Doves, a clandestine organization. However, when her lover (Andrew Koji) is brutally murdered, Webb embarks on a mission for vengeance. This series originates from Joe Barton, the creator of “Giri/Haji,” and also features Sarah Lancashire and Ben Whishaw. Netflix has high expectations for “Black Doves” and has already greenlit a second season.
On December 6th, the Christmas special “A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter” premieres on Netflix. This musical extravaganza stars the current singing sensation, Sabrina Carpenter, who has captured America’s affection with her hit singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.” The show boasts an impressive roster of guest stars, including Chappell Roan, Tyla, Shania Twain, Kali Uchis, Quinta Brunson, Cara Delevingne, Kyle Mooney, Nico Hiraga, Megan Stalter, Sean Astin, Owen Thiele, and Jillian Bell.
On December 11th, the opulent biopic “Maria,” directed by Pablo Larraín, will be released. This Netflix production is a strong contender for awards this season. The film portrays the last week of opera singer Maria Callas’ life, with Angelina Jolie taking on the role of the legendary Greek figure. At the Venice Film Festival, “Maria” received an emotional eight-minute standing ovation that left Jolie in tears. This film marks Larraín’s completion of a trilogy of biopics about famous women entangled in emotional turmoil, which also includes “Jackie” (2016) and “Spencer” (2021).
Titled “The Six Triple Eight“, this fourth Netflix production by acclaimed director Tyler Perry is set to premiere on December 20th. The movie is inspired by real-life events, chronicling the tale of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a unique and colorful Women’s Army Corps unit that was deployed overseas during World War II as the first and only unit of its kind. This captivating film boasts an impressive cast including Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Dean Norris, Sam Waterston, and Oprah Winfrey.
On Christmas Day, Netflix will attempt live sports streaming once more by airing two NFL games as part of their NFL on Christmas programming. In the initial game, the Baltimore Ravens will face off against the Houston Texans, and the second game features the Kansas City Chiefs against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Given the substantial investment to acquire NFL games, Netflix has enlisted Beyoncé to perform during halftime at the Ravens-Texans match, which is happening in her hometown of Houston. With past issues during the Jake Paul – Mike Tyson fight and the 2023 live reunion special of Love Is Blind, Netflix will strive to ensure a glitch-free viewing experience for these games.
Lastly, but definitely not less important, is the highly anticipated premiere of Squid Game season 2 on December 26th. The initial season of Hwang Dong-hyuk’s survival horror series arrived on Netflix in September 2021 and swiftly gained global popularity, setting a new record as Netflix’s most-watched series to date. It earned 14 Emmy nominations, including for outstanding drama series, marking the first time a non-English production was recognized in that category. In Squid Game season 2, Player 456 (Gi-hun) reappears with the aim of putting an end to the enigmatic survival game once and for all.
In December, Netflix added a variety of movies such as Daddy Day Care, The Happytime Murders, Little, Midway, Project X, We’re the Millers, Zero Dark Thirty, Compliance, and Mad Max: Fury Road to its collection.
