As a longtime movie enthusiast who’s spent countless hours in darkened theaters and even more time streaming films at home, I must say that I am genuinely excited about the upcoming offerings on Netflix this January. Philomena Cunk’s thought-provoking questions will surely challenge my intellect, while the return of a legendary film villain promises to stir emotions long dormant. The groundbreaking rights deal for live wrestling is particularly intriguing, as it opens up a new world I’ve yet to explore thoroughly.
The epic Western drama, with its gritty portrayal of the American frontier, seems tailor-made for my love of historical narratives. The spy caper featuring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz is sure to be a thrilling ride, given their charismatic on-screen chemistry. Lastly, Gabriel Basso reprising his breakout role brings back fond memories of the captivating story that first introduced me to his talents. All in all, these new films and series hitting Netflix in January promise an eclectic and engaging viewing experience for both old fans like myself and newcomers alike.
On January 2nd, Philomena Cunk, Netflix’s enigmatic investigative reporter known for her unique blend of ignorance and genius, will make her comeback. Created by Charlie Brooker, the mind behind Black Mirror, Diane Morgan reprises her role as Cunk in the new series Cunk on Life. This latest installment follows the success of Cunk on Earth and Cunk on Britain. In Cunk on Life, much like before, Cunk poses her signature absurdist, perplexing, and side-splittingly funny questions about profound topics to real-life experts. Whether they’re in on the joke or not remains a mystery. Don’t miss out!
Beginning worldwide on Netflix on January 3 is the eagerly awaited film titled “Wallace & Gromit: The Revenge of Feathers McGraw.” This marks the sixth installment in the cherished stop-motion animation series, “Wallace & Gromit.” In this adventure, our heroes find themselves facing off against none other than Feathers McGraw, the nefarious antagonist from “The Wrong Trousers,”, who harbors a grudge and seeks retribution. The film is directed by franchise creator Nick Park along with Merlin Crossingham, and has received a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (from 79 reviews) due to its stunning animation, numerous jokes, and yet another demonstration of Gromit’s status among the greatest screen heroes.
Beginning January 6, WWE makes its debut on Netflix as part of a revolutionary 10-year deal valued at $5 billion between the two entities. From that point forward, WWE’s premier show, “Monday Night Raw,” which was previously broadcasted on the USA Network, will find a new home on Netflix. In the United States, Canada, U.K., and Latin America, “Raw” will stream live every Monday night for 52 weeks out of the year. Additional regions will be added to this lineup in the future.
Starting January 9th, I’ll be diving headfirst into the gritty world of “American Primeval,” streaming exclusively on Netflix. Created by the genius behind “Friday Night Lights,” Peter Berg, and scripted by Mark L. Smith, who penned “The Revenant,” this series is a survival-focused exploration set in the brutal American frontier of 1857. The story unfolds as a dramatic portrayal and analysis of the clash between culture, religion, and community, with the land serving as both battleground and prize. This limited series follows an eclectic cast led by Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin, where survival is the ultimate objective. Notably, multiple Native Tribes, such as the Shoshone, Paiute, and Ute, who have long inhabited these lands, are also part of this struggle to claim or protect their territories.
The highly anticipated Netflix film “Back In Action” starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz will be available starting January 17th. In this spy comedy adventure directed by Seth Gordon, we find Matt (played by Foxx) and Emily (portrayed by Diaz), who chose to leave their CIA agent careers for family life. However, their peaceful existence is disrupted when they are compelled to return to their old jobs as their cover is exposed. The cast also includes Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott, Jamie Demetriou, McKenna Roberts, Rylan Jackson, and Glenn Close.
On January 23rd, the second season of the smash hit “The Night Agent” will be making its debut on Netflix. Originating from the book by Matthew Quirk, the first season revolved around Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso), a relatively minor FBI agent whose attempts to save the president in the initial season have earned him a position as a Night Agent in the upcoming season. However, working within the covert organization of Night Action will plunge Peter into a realm where peril lurks at every turn and trust is scarce. At present, the first season of “The Night Agent” ranks 7th among all English-language series on Netflix’s internal charts. The show has already been greenlit for a third season.
Some movies added to Netflix in January are: “Thirteen Going on Thirty,” “Apollo 13,” “Bruce Almighty,” “Colombiana,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat” and “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” “Erin Brockovich,” “Hereditary,” “Hotel Transylvania 1 & 2,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” “Inception,” “Interstellar,” “Little Fockers,” “Love Actually,” “Meet the Fockers,” “Meet the Parents,” “Melancholia,” “Notting Hill,” “Out of Africa,” “Rush Hour (1, 2, and 3),” and “Schindler’s List.” Additionally, “Spider-Man 1, 2, and 3” were also included.
