As a cinephile and TV enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the upcoming releases this October are nothing short of a dream come true! From the action-packed American Ninja Warrior: Ninja vs. Ninja to the heartwarming tales like Untapped: Closing America’s Opportunity Gap, there’s something for every taste and preference.
The return of a reality TV monster that’s sure to dominate social media conversation; Charlie and Nick’s blossoming romance; a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the NBA courtesy of LeBron James and Anthony Edwards; the latest gem from an action auteur; Tyler Perry’s first Netflix television drama and another helping espionage and drama from Keri Russell are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in October.
Starting October 2nd, Netflix unveils the latest season of their reality dating show, “Love Is Blind.” This is the seventh round for the original series, with spin-offs being produced in different countries as well. In this installment, a new group of singles will enter the pods, aiming to find true love and wed their partner, all within an alarmingly short timeframe. Although the show is still marketed as a “social experiment,” it has faced negative publicity and media scrutiny in recent seasons. Nevertheless, “Love Is Blind” continues to captivate audiences and spark heated discussions on social media, and the upcoming season promises to be the talk of the town this month.
Starting October 3rd, the highly praised British series Heartstopper, a queer dramedy produced by Netflix, comes back for its third season. This time around, Charlie (played by Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) develop their unexpected friendship into a romantic relationship, all while Charlie navigates some mental health struggles. The exciting update for season three is that the star of Bridgerton, Jonathan Bailey, will make a special appearance as Jack Maddox, who happens to be Charlie’s celebrity crush. Heartstopper is an on-screen adaptation of Alice Oseman’s graphic novels about two teenage boys exploring their feelings for each other at school. When it first premiered in April 2022, the series gained significant attention through word of mouth as a success for the streaming platform.
As a die-hard basketball fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming Netflix series “Starting 5,” set to debut on October 9th, just a few weeks before the new NBA season kicks off. This docuseries delves deep into the personal and professional lives of some of the league’s biggest names – Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis, and Jayson Tatum – during the 2023-24 season.
Action movie enthusiasts can look forward to a promising film titled “The Shadow Strays” dropping on Netflix on Oct. 17. Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, this Indonesian production revolves around the character of Codename 13, a young assassin who faces suspension following a botched mission. Notably, Tjahjanto is also known for his work in Netflix’s “The Big 4 ” (2022), “May the Devil Take You” (2018) and “The Night Comes for Us” (2018), as well as the Shudder release “May the Devil Take You Too” (2020). With strong praise from genre fans, Tjahjanto is poised for greater success and is currently working on the sequel to the action movie “Nobody“, starring Bob Odenkirk.
This month, renowned creative powerhouse Tyler Perry launches his initial drama series on Netflix titled “Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black“. According to the streaming service, this show centers around two women who live contrasting lives – one battling financial struggles after being disowned, and the other thriving in business success. Somehow, their paths intertwine. The 16-episode series, called “Beauty in Black“, will be split into two parts, with the first eight episodes becoming available on October 24th. As of now, a date for the second part has yet to be disclosed.
Towards the end of this month, Netflix plans to debut the second installment of the critically acclaimed political thriller “The Diplomat”. Starring Keri Russell, this series delves deep into the complexities and tensions surrounding the unique alliance between the U.S. and U.K., complete with espionage and political machinations aplenty. Set to premiere on October 31st, “The Diplomat” also boasts performances from Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh. The second season will introduce Allison Janney to the cast as well.
In October, Netflix added a variety of films to its library such as “21 Jump Street,” “22 Jump Street,” “8 Mile,” “The Birds,” “Boyz n the Hood,” “Bridesmaids,” “Brüno,” “Cinderella Man,” “Couples Retreat,” “Elysium,” “Escape Plan,” “Get Him to the Greek,” “The Girl Next Door,” “Halloween,” “It Chapter Two,” “Jarhead,” “Judy,” “The Karate Kid 1-3,” “Kung Fu Panda,” “Kung Fu Panda 3,” and “Kung Fu Panda 4.” Also included are “Legion,” “Marnie,” “Psycho,” “Psycho II,” “Red Dragon,” “Robin Hood” (2010), “Robin Hood” (2018), “Salt,” “Scarface,” “The Sentinel,” “Till Death,” “Two Weeks Notice,” “You’re Next,” “Scream,” “A Quiet Place Part II,” “Clifford the Big Red Dog,” “Selma,” “Woman of the Hour,” and “Book Club.
