However, it seems that the producers of Outlast Season 2 have taken my feedback to heart, as they’ve drastically changed their approach.
In the year 2023, Netflix boasted an impressive catalog of popular series, effortlessly attracting viewers who found themselves eager for more. Leading the pack were reality TV shows, managing to captivate audiences by encouraging them to root for certain contestants and become deeply invested in their experiences. Whether it was dating or makeover shows, it’s evident that competitive programs ignite viewer curiosity and can spark a deep fascination.
Despite the expected criticism and doubts about its continuation, the survival show has come back for a second season – a surprising move for many viewers. Given the likelihood that it would repeat the mistakes of Season 1, the arrival of Outlast Season 2 left audiences astonished by its innovative direction. As a die-hard movie buff, let me tell you about my favorite survival series, “Outlast.” It’s an exhilarating adventure that drops 16 competitors in the unforgiving wilderness of Alaska, where they can test their mettle and vie for a life-changing prize of $1 million. Just like the title suggests, the goal is to survive, with minimal equipment, and outlast the competition.
In this competition, there’s no specific structure or deadline for the contestants. The sole rule they must abide by to secure the prize money is that only one winning team exists. To claim the prize, you need to belong to a team in the first place. If a contestant gets expelled from their group or chooses to leave them, they either need to find a new team or risk elimination.
Outlast Season 1 Faced Massive Backlash
The concept behind the game Outlast had potential appeal because it introduced teamwork instead of solo combat, providing a fascinating base to observe which player assumes specific roles or tasks and ultimately, how the pressure of survival brings out various human traits. Indeed, it sparked something within players.
Instead of showcasing both the challenges and triumphs of teamwork as in Season 1 of Outlast, it surprisingly transformed into a reimagining of The Hunger Games. However, unlike Katniss Everdeen’s arrival or her arrow-filled skirmishes, the competitors ensured that the ominous setting of the game arena was effectively transported from the screens to the wilderness of Alaska.
The main focus of the competition wasn’t about understanding and enjoying nature, or learning survival skills. It would have been great if it was, but regrettably, the participants seemed more concerned with fighting each other. Their actions, such as raiding camps and stealing equipment, suggested that they were adhering to a sort of unwritten rule – “the absence of rules” – quite seriously.
In this reality show, not only was the harsh environment and frequent arguments disheartening, but the contestants who resorted to cruel tactics to win seemed to be given the most screen time. It’s no wonder that viewers found it hard to stomach. They anticipated a program that might offer insights into survival skills, but instead, they were subjected to unwarranted conflicts and underhanded sabotage, extinguishing any remaining interest in watching further episodes.
Outlast Season 2 Takes a Drastically Different Approach
Although the first season of Outlast fell short of expectations, it seems that either by a stroke of luck or perhaps acknowledging that human behavior is more intricate than initially assumed, Season 2 has been unveiled on Netflix. The fundamental rule remains consistent: 16 survivalists must divide into teams of four, and the team left standing at the end will claim a $1 million reward.
The season began in a way that brought back uncomfortable memories, as the team selection process was reminiscent of choosing sides for a game of Dodgeball in school. The tension and awkwardness between the remaining contestants at the final pick was palpable and hard to ignore. Despite this rather cringe-worthy moment, the show started off relatively smoothly with the teams dividing and commencing their battle for survival.
After finding a stable footing, Outlast Season 2 momentarily reverted to its past behaviors when one of the competitors, much like in the first season, forcefully entered another team’s camp and took some of their gear without permission (some might argue it was theft). This incident served as a stark reminder of how chaotic the initial Outlast season had been. However, with the passage of time and the introduction of a few societal guidelines, Outlast underwent an unprecedented 180-degree change.
Contrary to what both the contestant and the viewers anticipated, the decision to steal had some unpleasant outcomes. To everyone’s surprise, the other team members returned the stolen items and expelled their comrade from the group. It was hard to determine who was more stunned by these results, the contestant or the audience, as it was exactly the opposite of what occurred in Season 1. This new season offers a refreshing change, as it concentrates significantly on the competitors and their personal battles rather than inciting conflict among them. Unlike before, this Netflix series no longer casts team members as villains but instead lets nature assume that role, making survival skills the main focus.
As a movie reviewer, I’d put it this way: In the end, Outlast takes you on an exhilarating journey through the peaks and valleys of human connections. Unexpectedly, what started as a survival tale evolved into a learning experience, shedding light on the shockingly dark depths humans can plunge to when their survival instincts kick in. However, it also delves deeply into the practical aspects of surviving in the wilderness. Outlast is now streaming on Netflix.
