NetherRealm Studios Says Their Next Game was Decided '3 Years Ago'... Could it be Injustice 3?

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tad nostalgic when it comes to NetherRealm Studios and their iconic titles, Mortal Kombat and Injustice. The studio has managed to keep us fighting game enthusiasts engaged for years, alternating between these two franchises that cater to our love for both cartoonish violence and superhero action.

Over the recent years, NetherRealm Studios has primarily focused on developing similar games, switching between producing “Mortal Kombat” and “Injustice” series.

Following the release of Mortal Kombat 1’s newest expansion, “Khaos Reigns,” the mastermind behind MK, Ed Boon, discusses what challenges the team is prepared to confront next.

NetherRealm’s Next Game was Decided 3 Years Ago

In an interview with ComicBook, Boon revealed that they often decide their future projects even before the current one is launched. He explained, “We usually start planning the next game while we’re still working on the previous one… There’s a lot of pre-production work, research, and strategic planning involved. It’s not as if we finish the game and then suddenly wonder what our next project will be. In reality, we’ve known what our next game would be for about three years now, and we’ve been working on it to some extent ever since.

Last year saw the release of Mortal Kombat 1, indicating that the team had likely begun development on their following game even before the MK reboot was publicly unveiled.

Could Injustice 3 be in the Works?

It’s been speculated by many gaming enthusiasts that NetherRealm Studios might soon reveal details about the upcoming game, Injustice 3. Apart from their work on the popular Mortal Kombat series, this studio is also known for creating DC’s top-tier fighting game title, Injustice. This game offers a high-intensity experience with a gritty storyline that features renowned DC characters such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, among others from the Justice League. On occasion, the game, similar to Mortal Kombat, also introduces guest characters from various franchises like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Hellboy.

Compared to Mortal Kombat’s excessive violence, the Injustice series leans more towards a PG-13 rating in their action sequences. For instance, it wouldn’t make sense for a character like Superman to have his head ripped off slowly, as is common in Mortal Kombat. That’s why only characters inherently violent, such as the Joker, have been introduced to the Mortal Kombat series.

Since the last “Injustice” game was released in 2017, it seems like NetherRealm Studios might be ready to develop another DC-themed title now. It’s worth noting that more recent games such as “Gotham Knights” and “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” didn’t quite live up to audience expectations. So, maybe NetherRealm Studios can rekindle the DC brand’s popularity.

The Perfect Timing

Additionally, it aligns flawlessly with the upcoming release of James Gunn’s next Superman film. Given the hopeful shift towards a more optimistic DC universe in the future, NetherRealm Studios might consider transitioning to a more lighthearted approach for their Injustice series as well.

It’s possible that WB Pictures might exploit the multiverse concept this time around, showcasing different versions of Superman, ranging from Christopher Reeve’s portrayal to Henry Cavill’s. Given their resources and licensing rights, it seems feasible.

It hasn’t been specified when NetherRealm will unveil their next title, but at the moment, anticipation revolves around the upcoming DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 titled Khaos Reigns. At present, players can enjoy this game on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
