Approximately two months ago, the long-awaited animated series called “Creature Commandos” from the DC Universe made its debut. This show is available to stream with a Max subscription, and it’s already been confirmed that there will be a second season. In the coming days, we can anticipate more exciting offerings from this new franchise. For instance, “Superman” is set to release in July, followed by the second season of “Peacemaker” a month later. Furthermore, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” as well as projects involving “Clayface” and “Lanterns,” are all planned for 2026.
However, there are several DC films and TV series in development that are still quite a distance from being realized, if they ever will be. Frankly, with the latest whispers about what’s stalling Booster Gold, Waller, and The Authority, I secretly wish one of these three projects could simply be shelved.
Where Things Allegedly Stand With Booster Gold, Waller And The Authority
In case you missed it, last week, the heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, conducted a unique presentation for the media, which our very own Eric Eisenberg from TopMob was part of. During this event, Gunn shared some insights about the upcoming DC Universe projects he mentioned earlier.
Our Booster Gold character is holding up quite nicely. Waller, unfortunately, has faced a few hurdles, to be honest. As for Authority, they’ve encountered some problems. However, the rest of the operation seems to be running smoothly.
It appears that MyTimeToShineHello, or Booster as we might call them, claims to have insights into the challenges faced by these three projects. However, it’s important to note this information should be treated with some skepticism for now.
As for Booster Gold, development continues, but the hunt for a showrunner is still on going due to Danny McBride from Eastbound & Down being too occupied and losing interest.
Waller, on the other hand, is moving forward with a showrunner, actors, and scripts in place. Yet, James Gunn seems displeased with the current scripts, leading to them being rewritten until they meet his standards.
Regarding “The Authority” movie, it’s been temporarily halted due to perceived risks, with Warner Bros. Discovery, led by president and CEO David Zaslav, being reluctant to spend over $150 million on an R-rated film based on a less popular intellectual property (IP). As a result, the company is exploring options such as reducing the movie’s budget or potentially transforming it into an animated production.
I Hope The Authority Doesn’t Move Forward
Among all the DCU projects unveiled in January 2023, “The Authority” was the one I felt least compelled to explore. To be fair, my indifference is partly due to my lack of familiarity with the original comic book series, as I haven’t developed any emotional connection with its characters. However, given the abundance of mature-rated superhero content available today – such as “Logan,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “The Boys,” “Invincible,” “Doom Patrol,” and “The Umbrella Academy” – “The Authority” faces a tough challenge to distinguish itself. Even if it played a role in popularizing intense, violent superhero stories, the ongoing developmental issues surrounding the project might suggest it’s best to postpone watching it for now.
I’m not against having Authority characters in the DC Universe. For instance, María Gabriela de Faría is set to play Angela Spica, aka The Engineer, in Superman, and it would be great if other team members like Midnighter and Apollo were included in certain stories. However, The Authority isn’t something that particularly interests me, nor does it seem essential to the broader plans for the DC Universe. If it ever gets produced, I might watch it, but I wouldn’t mind if it doesn’t make it past development.
Currently, I’m eagerly anticipating the launch of “Superman” on July 11th. As for “Booster Gold” and “Waller,” I can’t wait to uncover more details about their upcoming TV series and get a rough idea of when they might be released.
