In the course of its run, “The Walking Dead” has introduced fans to many formidable antagonists, ranging from The Whisperers and The Governor in the primary series, to characters like The Croat and Dama from the first season of “Dead City,” a spinoff that revolves around Negan and Maggie. As we approach the second season premiere later this year, we’ve been given a sneak peek into the newest villain, thanks to actor Kim Coates who hints that his character could be one of the most ruthless yet.
MovieWeb had a chat with Coates regarding his latest Netflix series, American Primeval, and the possibility of a second season for Dead City was brought up. When asked to reveal some details about his antagonistic character in the upcoming season, Coates hinted that the role of Brugal was tailor-made for him.
“Eli Jorné, the producer, chose me for this role and told me ‘You need to portray this character,’ to which I replied asking for the scripts. They sent them over, and let me tell you, this character was tailor-made for me. He’s a jerk, he’s just a bad person, but he’s extremely intelligent and a billionaire. During the zombie apocalypse in Manhattan, he lived in an exclusive enclave, and when he emerged, Manhattan was overrun with zombies. He gathered his own group, and there are several such groups in Season 2. My character’s name is Brugal, and I’m definitely the most prominent member of my group. I kill a lot of zombies.”
Coates is primarily recognized for his role on the TV show “Sons of Anarchy,” where he played Tig Trager, a complex character who served as a moral guide to SAMCRO despite his unstable nature. Though he was involved in many questionable actions, he also infused the long-running series with a good deal of emotion that lasted until it ended in 2014. Post the show’s conclusion, Coates has been quite busy, featuring in multiple films and securing a leading part in the Canadian crime drama “Bad Blood.
Kim Coates Says His ‘Dead City’ Character Is One He’s “Never Played Before”
Beginning his acting career in film and television during the 1980s, Coates stands out as one of the finest character actors in contemporary or past generations. He has delivered memorable performances in films such as “The Last Boy Scout,” “Dead Silence,” “Open Range,” and “Goon.” Although he reached new heights portraying Trager on “Sons of Anarchy,” Coates claims that his character in “The Walking Dead: Dead City” is unlike any role he’s ever taken before.
Jeffery Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohen are absolutely fantastic, along with the entire cast and team behind the scenes. Shot in Boston, this season consists of eight episodes compared to six in the first one, making it even more exciting! It’s filled with laughter, action, insanity, and a whole lot of zombies. I’ve been given the chance to join the fun, playing a character I’ve never portrayed before – he’s both humorous and ruthless, yet innocent in some ways. I can hardly wait for everyone to see it!
Keep an eye out for Season 2 of “The Walking Dead: Dead City” to air later this year on AMC. Until then, don’t forget to watch Coates in “American Primeval,” premiering on Netflix on January 9. In this production, you’ll see a different aspect of the Canadian actor as he portrays the historical figure Governor Brigham Young in Peter Berg’s limited Western series.
