New ‘Golden Bachelor’ Mel Owens Says if Women on His Season Are “60 or Over, I’m Cutting Them”

The upcoming second season of “The Golden Bachelor” hasn’t started yet, but there’s already speculation swirling around the main character and his quest for romance.

Mel Owens, who previously played football in both college and professionally, now serves as the main figure this season. He played college football for the University of Michigan’s Wolverines team, followed by a nine-year stint as a linebacker with the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL.

In a recent episode of the Michigan football podcast “MGo Blue Podcasts with Jon Jansen”, Owens discussed his dating preferences for an upcoming show. He shared that during the casting process, he was asked about his preferences, to which he responded honestly by saying, “I prefer women aged 45 to 60.

When he was selected as the lead, Owens shared a meal with the executive producer of the show and stated, “If they’re 60 or older, I’m letting them go.” He also mentioned, “This isn’t ‘The Silver Bachelor,’ this is ‘The Golden Bachelor.'” (Note: The original text contains emphasis tags, which have been removed for clarity.)

The executive producer said, “Don’t worry, they’ll be great,” repeating his assurance. He then instructed, “‘Cut’ is not an option.” In response, the individual explained that it was a term used in American football. As the conversation continued, he clarified that he had no control over who would appear on the show for his season. Furthermore, he expressed concerns about the physical fitness of the contestants, stating that they should be physically fit because he maintains a fitness regimen and requested that producers try to avoid women with artificial hips or wigs.

Warner Bros. and ABC, responsible for the popular dating series, have yet to respond to our requests for a statement.

At 72 years old, Turner found love within the show with Theresa Nist and tied the knot in a televised wedding on ABC in January 2024. Unfortunately, just three months after their nuptials, the couple announced their separation in a joint interview on “Good Morning America.” Nearly a year later, Turner disclosed that he had been diagnosed with cancer.
