New Halloween Prequel Pitch Sounds Like Controversial Franchise Sequel

As a devoted Halloween fan who grew up watching Michael Myers terrorize Haddonfield, I can’t help but feel a sense of dismay when I hear about projects that seem to be treading on hallowed ground. The proposed Loomis prequel series, while it may sound intriguing in theory, feels like an attempt to replicate the mistakes made with Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

Is it possible that we’re seeing a resurrection of the “Season of the Witch” in terms of questionable choices regarding the Halloween franchise? Indeed, Titus Peoples and Nigel Harden are hinting at a potential repetition of past events, as they work together on a script with aspirations to transform it into a prequel series for the widely acclaimed horror franchise. To clarify, these two creatives have no prior involvement in the Miramax-developed series

Instead of their original concept named “Loomis,” the revised pitch focuses on Dr. Sam Loomis before his first encounter with Michael Myers (the infamous Shape) in 1963. Similar to how Halloween III: Season of the Witch excluded the Shape in 1982, this series will not feature him as well. They updated the proposal’s status on Facebook accordingly

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the pilot episode of our new project is nearly complete at 90%. We’re still in the very early stages of development, but I, along with my creative partner Titus Peoples and Nigel Harden, are hard at work writing and developing this exciting new venture

It’s worth mentioning that a producer named Peoples, who only has one credit on IMDb for the 2020 film “The Cattle Farmer,” is partnering with an equally unknown writer called Harden to attempt developing a Halloween series. This concept hasn’t been presented to streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu yet. Peoples and Harden are planning a Michael Myers-absent version of Halloween, mirroring the bumpy journey taken by director Tommy Lee Wallace in “Halloween III: Season of the Witch.” In a post on his Instagram, Peoples shared their idea, stating it’s a different take on the Halloween franchise

As a film enthusiast, I’ve been captivated by the enigma of Dr. Samuel Loomis’ life long before he crossed paths with Michael Myers. Together with my esteemed collaborator and writing partner @pbr__papi, we aim to delve deeper into the Halloween mythos through this exciting new series. The pilot episode is nearly complete, and the team at Ultimate Class Studios are brimming with anticipation! We’re putting pen to paper and pushing forward as we unravel the cases that preceded the infamous Michael Myers

Loomis Prequel Pitch Is in No Way Connected to Real Halloween Series

Initially, Titus Peoples and Nigel Harden plan to submit their prequel script titled “Loomis” to screenwriting contests and film festivals before considering a sale to a significant streaming platform (as reported by iHorror). In contrast, the highly anticipated “Halloween” series is set to reboot the franchise without completely abandoning its central character, unlike what “Loomis” might do. Earlier this year, Marc Helwig, Head of Worldwide Television at Miramax, stated in an interview with Deadline that:

“The core inspiration comes from the initial John Carpenter movie, featuring characters from that film, along with possibly lesser-explored groups in modern adaptations or even multiple versions. This is a fresh take, returning to the original film, rather than branching off from any of the more recent adaptations.”

In 2023, Miramax emerged victorious from a fierce bidding competition for the television rights to their forthcoming Halloween series. As expressed in an interview (via Deadline), Helwig stated, “We’re over the moon about bringing Halloween to TV screens.” We are eager to extend our long-standing and prosperous collaboration with Trancas and Malek Akkad in introducing this legendary franchise to a fresh medium of storytelling and a new cohort of enthusiasts

Currently, as we speak, there’s no confirmed release date available yet for Miramax’s Halloween series. For those unfamiliar with Moustapha Akkad’s approach to Michael Myers’ absence in Halloween III: Season of the Witch, here’s a video clip from the late producer discussing his plans to steer the franchise back on course after omitting the Shape in the questionable sequel (found at the 1 hour 11 minute mark). This is certainly food for thought for those working on the Loomis spin-offs as well
