As a movie buff with over three decades of comic book-inspired cinema under my belt, I must say that the latest development in the upcoming “Joker: Folie à Deux” has me absolutely thrilled! The first look at Harry Lawtey as the young and ambitious Harvey Dent is just the cherry on top of an already tantalizing sequel.
In approximately one month, “Joker: Folie à Deux” is set to hit the screens, and it has unveiled the initial glimpse of another antagonist destined to appear in this upcoming film. The follow-up to the 2019’s “Joker” will once again star Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/The Joker, along with Lady Gaga portraying Harley Quinn. Initially marketed as a standalone production, the original movie also showcased several DC characters such as Thomas Wayne, Alfred Pennyworth, and a young Bruce Wayne. Continuing this trend, it appears that the sequel will introduce one of Batman’s legendary adversaries – Harvey Dent, who later transforms into Two-Face.
Warner Bros. unveiled a fresh advertisement for “Joker: Two Faces,” using platform X, and it’s been confirmed that Harry Lawtey, a notable figure from the world of entertainment, will portray Harvey Dent in this sequel. The preview showcases a younger Harvey Dent climbing the career ladder, identified as an assistant district attorney on TV. In the storyline, it seems that Dent is one of the key figures pushing for prosecution against Arthur Fleck, the Joker from the previous movie. Speaking to news reporters, he condemns Fleck, stating, “Arthur Fleck is a monster. He knew his actions. His violent acts sparked riots among his followers, and they’re still ready to commit violence in his name.” Check out the clip below:
A New Version of Two-Face Joins Joker 2
In the upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux, it seems that Harvey Dent’s role may reveal the instant when the District Attorney transforms into Two-Face. As we know from the comics and Batman Forever, Dent becomes Two-Face during a trial in a courtroom. Given that the Joker was responsible for Dent’s transformation in The Dark Knight, it looks like Folie à Deux may offer a unique take on this development. Since the first Joker concluded with Arthur Fleck’s actions indirectly leading to the creation of Batman by inspiring someone to kill Bruce Wayne’s parents, it is possible that the Joker in this sequel might also be responsible for the emergence of Two-Face.
In August 1942, the villain Harvey Dent/Two-Face made his debut in Detective Comics #66. Initially created by Batman’s creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger, he was initially a minor antagonist and was seldom seen during the Silver Age of Comics. He also did not appear in the 1960’s Adam West TV series. However, during the 1980s and 1990s, the character experienced a significant surge in popularity and is now widely recognized as one of Batman’s most famous and tragic adversaries.
Initially portrayed by Billy Dee Williams in the 1989 film “Batman”, Harvey Dent was intended to transform into Two-Face in the sequel. However, the role was reassigned to Tommy Lee Jones for “Batman Forever” in 1995 due to Warner Bros.’ desire for a high-profile actor. Jones’ Two-Face differed significantly from the comic book version, as he was more flamboyant compared to the tragic character fans were familiar with. In 2008, Aaron Eckhart stepped into the role in “The Dark Knight”, drawing inspiration from the “The Long Halloween” comic. Most recently, Nicholas D’Agosto played Harvey Dent on the TV series “Gotham, while Misha Collins took over the role on the short-lived “Gotham Knights”. On the Fox series “Gotham”, a different actor named D’Agosto portrayed Harvey Dent.
