In 2024, two women bravely spoke out against my long-time idol, Neil Gaiman, accusing him of sexual misconduct. As more reports have surfaced since then, the harrowing scope of those allegations has become increasingly evident. The revelation that his ex-wife, musician Amanda Palmer, may have been complicit in these incidents underscores the chilling impact that power and control can have in such situations. It’s a stark reminder of the importance of believing survivors and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
Warning: This article includes mentions of sexual violence and assault.
Following an extensive investigation by Vulture, which involved interviews with four out of five women who have come forward with accusations of misconduct, it appears that Neil Gaiman’s methods of abuse were far-reaching. One of these women, Scarlett Pavlovich, initially met Gaiman in New Zealand and later worked as his children’s nanny. In an alarming incident, the author is said to have made sexual advances towards Pavlovich during their first encounter. After their initial meeting, it’s alleged that their conversation transitioned into Gaiman persuading her to take a bath in a tub located in his garden while he was on a work call. According to Pavlovich, this situation then escalated, with Gaiman joining her in the bathtub and sexually assaulting her.
The accusations against Gaiman become increasingly troubling as more information comes to light, with numerous instances detailed – some of which are too graphic and distressing to discuss here. In a particularly harrowing case, it is claimed that Gaiman assaulted Pavlovich while they were both watching screeners for the first season of The Sandman, a Netflix series based on his comic books published by DC Comics. Pavlovich reported that the attack was so severe she felt compelled to vomit, and this account continues to be deeply disturbing.
Allegations Against Neil Gaiman Show a Patten of Abuse
Another woman, Kendra Stout, additionally recounts instances of abuse by Neil Gaiman, claiming he pressured her into engaging in aggressive sexual activities. According to Stout, Gaiman argued that he was unable to partake in any other kind of intimacy. Moreover, she alleges that Gaiman attacked her in a different occurrence when she rejected his advances because of a urinary tract infection.
The report includes claims from various women who share strikingly similar experiences, much like those who’ve spoken out in public. As per the report, most of these women encountered Gaiman during their twenties, with the youngest being 18 at the time. It is alleged that the majority of these incidents occurred when Gaiman was in his forties or beyond, except for one instance. Each woman had a close connection with Gaiman; two worked for him personally (Pavlovich claims she served as an unpaid assistant and nanny for months), while five were admirers of his work. The troubling aspect is that Gaiman openly promotes himself as a feminist and advocate for women, which makes these accusations even more disconcerting.
The report contains a troubling detail: Two women assert that they were victimized in front of Gaiman and Palmer’s son. Furthermore, Pavlovich alleges that Gaiman’s son mimicked the abusive behavior Gaiman is accused of by referring to her as “slave” and making her address him as “master,” mirroring the abusive power dynamic claimed in the accusations against Gaiman.
Several individuals have raised concerns about Amanda Palmer, Neil Gaiman’s ex-wife, and her potential involvement in the accusations. A woman named Pavlovich, who became friends with Palmer and was later introduced to Gaiman as a potential nanny, claims that Palmer was informed about the assaults and mistreatment. According to Pavlovich, Palmer responded by promising to “handle the situation.” When the nanny reported her allegations to the police, Pavlovich states that Palmer declined to speak with investigators, and she was not rehired as a nanny despite her financial struggles – a situation known to both Gaiman and Palmer. It wasn’t until after signing a non-disclosure agreement that Pavlovich received any payment for her work from Gaiman. Since their divorce, representatives of Gaiman have suggested that Palmer played a significant role in bringing this story to light due to the contentious nature of their split.
In response to the accusations, Gaiman himself asserts that many of them are false and maintains that any sexual encounters were consensual. As a result of these allegations, there hasn’t been significant legal action taken against him, but some of his projects have experienced delays since they initially surfaced. Despite this, Netflix is still set to release Season 2 of The Sandman, and Amazon continues to work on a six-episode adaptation of Anansi Boys, which was completed in 2022.
