30 Years Later, People Have Different Opinions on The Trial of The Century

If you didn’t live or recall the events back then, let us fill you in. It’s hard to believe, but it’s been over 25 years since OJ Simpson, a former NFL star and actor, stood trial for the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her boyfriend Ron Goldman. They were both brutally stabbed outside of Brown’s condominium in Los Angeles on June 12, 1994.

The eight-month-long court case, showcasing substantial forensic evidence linking Simpson to the murders, aired for the first time on television (Court TV). This occurred when the city’s Black community and law enforcement were particularly strained, following the race riots and murder of Rodney King just two years earlier. Leveraging this tension, Simpson’s legal team successfully argued for his acquittal, a verdict that gained global attention. This contentious decision served to highlight the heightened racial tensions present at the time.

Approximately 95 million people tuned in to watch the notorious police pursuit of O.J. Simpson in a white Ford Bronco, as he refused to surrender himself; several television networks even interrupted the NBA Finals to broadcast it. However, over time, public sentiment has generally moved towards the conviction that Simpson was indeed responsible for the murder of his ex-wife and Goldman.

It’s worth mentioning that Goldman’s father took legal action against Simpson for the murders in a civil court. In 1997, the jury decided unanimously that Simpson was responsible for the deaths of Goldman and Brown, and as a result, they were granted a substantial compensation (much of which has not been received by the family).

In April 2024, Simpson passed away at the age of 76 following a long fight against cancer. Known as one of the greatest running backs in history, this recognition was often eclipsed by his numerous legal issues, such as a 2007 plot for robbery and kidnapping that resulted in nine years behind bars. Additionally, he collaborated on a book titled “If I Did It” about the high-profile trial, which is certainly something an innocent individual wouldn’t do.

American Manhunt: OJ Simpson, a four-part docuseries, premieres on Netflix on January 29, 2025.
