New On Netflix, Disney+, And More: 9 Streaming Shows And Movies To Watch This Week (July 15-21)

As a huge fan of animated series and DC comics, I’m absolutely thrilled about the upcoming premiere of “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!” on Max. Having been hooked on Harley Quinn since its debut, I can’t wait to see more of this underrated Batman villain in his own spinoff series. With its foul-mouthed and violent glory, I have high hopes that it will be just as wild and ridiculous as its predecessor.

As someone who spends far too much time indoors during the sweltering summer heat, I can relate to the struggle of finding something worthwhile to watch among the endless options on streaming platforms. The sheer volume of new content on Netflix and Hulu can be overwhelming, making it a challenge to decipher what’s truly worth your valuable time.  Simone Biles Rising

Three years ago, I found myself in a similar situation as Simone Biles when she made the surprising decision to withdraw from the Summer Olympic Games. It was an unimaginable move that sparked both admiration from Taylor Swift and more, but also criticism from others. Now, I’m excited to learn more about this gymnastics phenom and her reasons for stepping back through a new documentary series. The show will explore the events that unfolded since then, leading up to her triumphant return as part of Team USA at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The upcoming documentary, releasing a week prior to the Summer Games, is an excellent preparation method for sports enthusiasts, providing excitement as they anticipate the coming two-week spectacle on a different streaming platform.

Simone Biles Rising premieres July 17 on Netflix.

Star Wars: The Acolyte, Season Finale

Star Wars enthusiasts continue to anticipate the release of forthcoming films in the franchise, yet the brand has flourished on streaming platforms. The newest addition, “The Acolyte” series on Disney+, has attracted a large viewership by offering a unique live-action Star Wars experience that deviates from the familiar Skywalker Saga characters and settings. With its unpredictable plot twists, fans should mark their calendars for the July 16 debut of the final episode to avoid missing out on the thrilling conclusion.

Currently, it’s uncertain if “Acolyte” will have a second season or when that may occur. Consequently, we can’t predict whether the existing season will conclude with a clear-cut ending or leave numerous unanswered questions for potential future installments to address.

Cobra Kai Season 6: Part I

The Karate Kid spawned sequels, reboots, and remakes, but its most successful incarnation may be Cobra Kai, the series that picked up the story of Daniel and Johnny decades later. Every season of the show has been a hit, since even before it was available with a Netflix subscription. The first batch of episodes from the show’s final season are arriving this week.

In simpler terms, the first half of the last season is out now, so devoted viewers don’t have to prepare for a series end just yet. Newcomers, however, might want to watch previous episodes expeditiously if they wish to be up-to-date.

Cobra Kai Season 6 premieres July 18 on Netflix.

Kite Man: Hell Yeah!

One of the most beloved Batman-connected media creations in recent times has shifted focus from the dark knight himself to one of his notorious adversaries. The raucous and bloodthirsty “Harley Quinn” animated series has garnered massive popularity amongst viewers. Although fans are eagerly anticipating Season 5, as well as other upcoming DC TV projects, they’ll be treated to a new offering this week that we hope will live up to expectations.

In a new spin-off titled “Kite Man: Yes!”, we join the quirky Batman antagonist, Kite Man, continuing his story from his appearance in “Harley Quinn“. Given the unpredictable nature of its predecessor, it’s likely that this series will be just as exhilarating, if not more so, due to its unusual leading character.

Kite Man: Hell Yeah premieres July 18 on Max.

Those About to Die

As a die-hard fan of Sword and Sandals movies since my teenage years, I must admit that 2023 is shaping up to be an absolutely thrilling year for me. The anticipation is palpable as we eagerly await the release of “Gladiator 2,” the long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s iconic Oscar-winning film. But here’s the kicker: that’s not all!

In the television series “Those About to Die, Anthony Hopkins portrays the Emperor overseeing gladiatorial combats in Ancient Rome. Given Roland Emmerich’s background as a skilled creator of grand visual effects, it is reasonable to anticipate that the show will be visually stunning.

Those About to Die premieres July 18 on Peacock.

NFL Flag Football Championship

During the current trend of streaming services replacing conventional television in numerous aspects, live sports remain dominated by traditional TV. Disney+ has experimented with distinctive live sporting events on occasion, and this will recur as they broadcast two live flag football championships: one for boys and one for girls.

Watching flag football for kids on TV might seem unconventional, but given the ongoing development of live sports streaming platforms by entertainment companies, it could be a sign of things to come. With no other football options available at the moment, it’s worth giving it a try.

NFL Flag Football Championship premieres July 21 on Disney+.

My Spy: The Eternal City

In 2020, “My Spy,” an action-comedy featuring Dave Bautista as a CIA agent involved with a young kid, was scheduled for a theatrical release. However, a global pandemic disrupted those plans, leading to the film’s premiere on Amazon Prime Video instead. The movie apparently resonated strongly with viewers, resulting in the announcement of a sequel for Amazon Prime subscribers.

In “My Spy: The Eternal City,” I, as an excited fan, follow the story of Dave Bautista’s retired special agent who takes on the responsibility of supervising a school trip for a bright young girl named Sophie. Unbeknownst to them, their European adventure coincides with an ongoing terrorist plot.

My Spy: The Eternal City Premieres July 18 on Prime Video.

Fifty Shades Darker/Fifty Shades Freed

One advantage of using streaming services is that most series are typically made available on a single platform, enabling viewers to binge-watch all installments together if they prefer. However, disappointingly for “Fifty Shades of Grey” Netflix subscribers, only the initial film was previously added. Fortunately, starting now, both “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed” will also be joining their predecessor on the platform.

As a gamer, I wouldn’t say that the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movies are everyone’s cup of tea. But, it’s undeniable that they were blockbuster hits in theaters. So, if you’re among those who enjoy the series, now’s your chance to watch the whole trilogy from the comfort of your own home, without any judgment from others.

Stream all three Fifty Shades movies beginning July 16 on Netflix.

 Love Lies Bleeding

Having a Max subscription brings you the joy of watching an impressive collection of A24’s finest films. Although Love Lies Bleeding didn’t make a significant impact at the box office or garner many awards, its unique and bizarre nature makes it a must-see for 2024.

In a surprising and multilayered twist, “Love Lies Bleeding” seems to be a noir queer love story on the surface. However, there’s much more depth to discover. This film is certainly worth exploring for those open-minded enough to appreciate it. It might not appeal to everyone, but for the right audience, it will be a delightful discovery.

Love Lies Bleeding premieres July 18 on Max.

Based on my own experience as a dedicated sports fan, I can confidently say that the upcoming events will undoubtedly keep me hooked to my television screen for the next week. The anticipation and excitement leading up to these events have always left me on the edge of my seat. And with my past experiences, I know that each moment is filled with thrill and unpredictability. I truly hope that this summer will continue to deliver the same level of entertainment and leave me wanting more.
