New Show ‘Shifting Gears’ Stealing Wednesday Night Ratings Throne from ‘One Chicago’

For a long while, I’ve relied on the One Chicago series to fill my Wednesday evenings, assuming this trend would continue into the 2025 TV lineup. However, it seems that NBC’s three-hour programming block might face some competition. Although shows like Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. are still drawing audiences, ABC is making a strong entry, capturing my affection and viewership numbers.

Allen came back to television networks in January with his fresh sitcom titled “Shifting Gears“, co-starring another well-known sitcom actor, Kat Dennings. This series airs every Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET, which happens to be the same time as “Chicago Med“. Unlike “Med“, which runs for an hour, “Shifting Gears” is just a half-hour show. However, it offers a more optimistic viewing experience and moves along at a faster pace. Additionally, viewers seeking a touch of nostalgia can find it in “Shifting Gears“, as it caters to those who miss the charm of shows like “Home Improvement” and “Last Man Standing“.

A lot of people seem to share my sentiment about the current Wednesday night schedule. According to TVLine, Shifting Gears is rapidly growing into a massive hit at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesdays, and Chicago Med needs to be cautious. The sitcom’s episode from February 12 attracted a total of 4.5 million viewers and saw an increase in weekly audience with a demo rating of 0.4. It was advantageous since the One Chicago shows were on hiatus that week, but it’s noteworthy that the premiere episode last month came close to matching Chicago Med’s ratings.

Despite being early in its run, the series “Shifting Gears” has shown great potential on Wednesdays. Notably, Nancy Travis from “Last Man Standing” has joined for a reunion with Tim Allen. Additionally, Jay Leno is expected to make an appearance following his recurring role on “Last Man Standing.” Even if you’re not familiar with “Last Man Standing,” the shared history between the cast members makes it an enjoyable watch.

It doesn’t make the Chicago shows any less thrilling or captivating, as they continue to be so. The One Chicago crossover event serves as a testament that the franchise is still delivering all the twists and turns it’s known for. There’s no end to the franchise just yet.

It’s too bad that I need to select which shows to watch live each week, but at least Chicago Med can be viewed with a Peacock subscription and Shifting Gears is available on Hulu, so things aren’t completely hopeless. In fact, Wednesday nights are starting to feel like the new Thursdays, with engaging, intriguing, thrilling, and dramatic shows on the way. And we’re still far from finale episodes.
