New Steam Deck Update Boosts Battery Life and Stability

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the recent Steam Deck update has been a game-changer for me. The battery life improvement alone is a godsend, as it allows me to play on the go without worrying about running out of juice. It’s like having an extra hour or two in my gaming sessions!

Over the past weekend, Steam Deck enthusiasts might have experienced one of the best times yet. Valve has just rolled out a fresh update for the native operating system of Steam Deck – SteamOS. The SteamOS 3.6.19 update brings several stability enhancements such as installation fixes, updates to Game Recording, and crucially, improvements in battery life.

Our social head, Kris Alfonte, meticulously examined the changes in the most recent update. He tried it out across different games, and we were delighted to discover that the LCD on the Steam Deck lasted 5%-10% more than expected thanks to the new battery enhancement included in this update. Kris suggests that with this extra battery life, you have time to go get your charger before you push your device’s battery beyond its limits.

Instead of viewing playing handheld devices when they’re critically low on battery as an extreme sport, this update has significantly enhanced Wi-Fi connections and ensured consistent game download speeds. For instance, Robocop: Rogue City now runs smoothly with minimal input delays, thanks to FSR being turned on, contrasting its previous struggle with significant input lags before the update.

While the new update isn’t perfect, it’s important to note that it impacted multiple games, with Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr being significantly affected. Now, even when set on low settings, the game has become sluggish, as Kris pointed out, which can be disappointing if you were eager to play this ARPG title on-the-go. On a positive note, the update also enhanced microSD card stability, a feature that, though it hasn’t been an issue for Kris previously, is still considered beneficial in our opinion.

In essence, the update achieved its goals: it enhanced stability and made overall improvements to the Deck. Thanks to Valve’s meticulous attention to their handheld device, we can now bid farewell to game crashes and enjoy a smoother dashboard experience. Let’s hope that Valve will soon roll out additional fixes for any affected games, bringing joy back to our dear Kris.
