As a seasoned gamer and avid follower of the K-pop scene, I’ve seen my fair share of drama, but the saga of NewJeans is one for the history books. Having been around long enough to remember groups that were treated unfairly and saw their careers cut short, it’s heartening to see a group like NewJeans standing up for themselves against mistreatment from their label, ADOR.
Girl group NewJeans has officially announced their departure from HYBE-owned label ADOR.
At a press conference held approximately two months following allegations of mistreatment by ADOR staff towards the group members, the K-pop collective officially announced the news. According to Music Business Worldwide, the artists plan to carry on creating music, although it may not bear the NewJeans label any longer. Danielle, one of the band members, stated that this does not imply abandoning the name altogether; instead, they will persist in defending the NewJeans brand. Despite a possible name change, remember that NewJeans will never cease to exist.
A member named Hanni expressed that we’ve encountered unfair treatment, not just for ourselves but also towards our employees. We’ve dealt with numerous roadblocks, inconsistencies, intentional misinformation, and manipulation across various aspects of our operations. In essence, Hanni described ADOR as a company that has lost its genuine connection to music and prioritizes the image of being a functioning business over artistic integrity. They seem more concerned with generating profit than considering the adverse impacts their questionable methods might have.
Additionally, NewJeans mentioned their intention to collaborate further with Min Hee-jin, a previous CEO of ADOR and their creative director. However, Min was dismissed from her role at the label following allegations that she aimed to seize control of ADOR from its parent company by selling shares and disclosing confidential data, which were brought forth by HYBE.
Despite ADOR announcing a supposed termination of NewJeans’ contract, they clarified to Music Business Worldwide that the original agreement remains valid. The group reportedly notified media about a press conference at 6 p.m. KST, and an hour later, ADOR responded to NewJeans’ ultimatum through email, having previously sent a written version earlier in the day. In their statement, ADOR expressed regret that the press conference was organized prematurely, before receiving a response to NewJeans’ legal notice.
Regarding the agreement, ADOR has not breached any terms. A single assertion of a broken trust does not justify ending the contract. Consequently, we ask NewJeans members to carry on working with ADOR for future projects, just as they have done so far.
