As a battle-hardened gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen the ebb and flow of trends in the gaming industry. From the humble beginnings of Pong to the current juggernauts like Fortnite and Call of Duty, I’ve been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt. Now, it seems Battlefield is considering a new direction – open-world gameplay.
In the world of gaming, there’s a long-standing wisdom: if you can’t outdo your rivals, collaborate with them instead. This idea has been consistently demonstrated in battle royale games like Apex Legends, Warzone, and Fortnite, where they seem to be constantly borrowing ideas from each other. Now, it appears that Battlefield might be next to follow suit.
Since their beginning, Battlefield and Call of Duty have been closely associated in the realm of warfare shooter games. While Battlefield made its debut in 2002 with Battlefield 1942, it wasn’t too long before Call of Duty entered the scene with a World War II-themed shooter in 2003. Ever since then, they’ve been vying for supremacy.
Next Battlefield could be going open-world
Regrettably, Call of Duty (CoD) has held the title as the dominant shooter series for quite some time now, consistently releasing new installments each year, which seems to overshadow Battlefield. The lukewarm reception towards Battlefield 2042 and the silence about its successor contrast starkly with CoD’s ongoing success, as it continues to gather momentum in the gaming world.
Die-hard fans of Battlefield fervently anticipate that a temporary break will spur creativity for a more impressive game release. Yet, one might wonder if this wasn’t what we were expecting with Battlefield 2042? Nevertheless, while Call of Duty has been actively innovating, the developers of Battlefield are quietly observing and picking up valuable lessons.
On Tech4Gamers forum, a user has discovered a job listing for a Senior Environment Artist, who will work on the upcoming Battlefield game. Notably, the job posting indicates that “experience with open world is beneficial,” although it doesn’t definitively state that the game will be open-world. This hint, however, offers us our strongest indication so far about the possible nature of the next Battlefield game.
The original post observes that Battlefield games generally feature larger, open-world-like environments compared to many first-person shooter (FPS) titles. However, it seems DICE could be adopting a strategy from Call of Duty (CoD). While Modern Warfare 3 experimented with underwhelming Open Combat Missions, Black Ops 6’s Campaign appears to be moving towards an open-world approach.
Supporter’s thoughts were divided regarding an open-world Battlefield concept, as one enthusiast expressed, “Impressive! An open-world game could revolutionize Battlefield. Expansive landscapes might offer increased player freedom, yet I fervently hope the series’ signature fast-paced, instant action isn’t compromised in the process.”
Another person chimed in, “An open-world Battlefield seems like a blend of chaos and thrilling gameplay experiences! I’m eager to see how they manage the balance,” but one critic countered, “I’m unsure if an open-world Battlefield is a good idea. Won’t it sacrifice the close, intense combat it’s recognized for? 🤔.”
It’s obvious that Battlefield needs to undergo a transformation following the controversy surrounding Battlefield 2042. Instead of the promised destructible skyscrapers, we were given a game that resembles Apex Legends and is heavily reliant on microtransactions for survival. Will the next Battlefield manage to outperform Call of Duty or will it simply join the ranks of forgotten failures like its predecessor?
