In a shift from the small town life of “Stranger Things,” Sherman Augustus is moving to the DC Universe. The seasoned actor and former football player has just been cast in DCU’s “Lanterns,” where he will play John Senior, the father of Aaron Pierre’s character, John Stewart. Known for his strong-willed nature, John Senior clings to the past and is not one to easily bend. His role will be recurring, making frequent appearances in the upcoming HBO drama series inspired by the DC Green Lantern comics. Augustus joins the show’s star-studded cast that includes Aaron Pierre, Kyle Chandler (portraying Hal Jordan), Kelly MacDonald (playing Kerry, a dedicated sheriff), and newcomer Kelly MacDonald, who has signed on to play the series’ regular character Kerry.
The partnership between an experienced character and their fresh recruit promises to be filled with tension, excitement, and occasional humor throughout its journey. In the case of ‘Lanterns’, it’s no exception, as the narrative revolves around Hal Jordan (a seasoned Green Lantern and ex-test pilot close to retirement) and John Stewart (the novice Green Lantern that Jordan is training to pass his mantle on to). These cosmic champions find themselves embroiled in a murder mystery that gradually reveals something far more sinister. The series is jointly produced by HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios, featuring eight episodes in total. Chris Mundy serves as the showrunner for this production.
Among the new characters introduced recently are Augustus, Garret Dillahunt playing William Macon (a contemporary cowboy who’s both charming and self-righteous), Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe (an influential woman who keeps her cool and is as cunning as the men she interacts with), Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro (a former Green Lantern member who was once Hal’s mentor but has turned against him), Nicole Ari Parker as Bernadette (Stewart’s mother), Jason Ritter as Billy Macon (Kerry’s husband), and J. Alphonse Nicholson as the younger John Senior.
In the fourth season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” Sherman Augustus reappears as Lt. Colonel Jack Sullivan, a character he also portrayed in AMC’s “Into the Badlands” as Nathaniel Moon. His television career started with an appearance on the 1980s murder-mystery series “Murder, She Wrote,” where he played Officer Rossi in the episode titled “A Virtual Murder.” He also made guest appearances in shows like “The Nanny,” “Star Trek: Voyager,” “NCIS,” two episodes of “P-Valley,” and several others.
It Took Sherman Augustus Some Time to Come Around to ‘Stranger Things’
It’s widely recognized that “Stranger Things” is Netflix’s most successful original series, captivating viewers from the get-go. However, this wasn’t the case for Sherman Augustus. In an interview with Black Girl Nerds (BGN), the actor shared his unique experience: before landing a recurring role, he hadn’t actually watched the show.
It wasn’t until recently that I finally warmed up to it. It’s one of those topics that everyone in my family is discussing, raving about the series, Stranger Things, its creator Shawn Levy, and the Duffer brothers. At the beginning of 2019, I received a call from casting director Carmen Cuba. I recorded myself for the show, and suddenly, there was some interest. Now, I have to catch up on the show because I’ve been tardy to its premier. I’ve finally completed all three seasons.
