As a long-time gamer and football enthusiast who has spent countless hours huddled around a screen, cheering for my favorite teams, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon hearing the news about the NFL’s antitrust lawsuit.
In an unexpected turn of events, a federal judge has reversed a $4.7 billion ruling that previously found the National Football League (NFL) guilty of antitrust law violations in its broadcasting model, as determined by a jury trial.
In a ruling by U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez, the NFL was allowed to overturn the verdict due to some expert testimonies presented in the trial being deemed unnecessary. Without these testimonies, it was determined that no jury, acting reasonably, could have established class-wide harm or damages.
The eight-year-long court dispute primarily revolved around accusations that the NFL league and its 32 teams colluded illegally against antitrust laws, enabling them to secure exclusive contracts with television broadcasters for the rights to telecast out-of-market games. If the ruling was upheld, the NFL could potentially lose approximately $15 billion due to tripled damages in antitrust cases. Moreover, it might have been compelled to alter its broadcasting strategy.
In June, a jury sided with fans who believed they had been unfairly charged for Sunday Ticket. However, requests to reverse jury decisions using what’s known as a motion for summary judgment are typically unsuccessful. In this instance, such a motion was granted.
“The NFL spokesperson expressed their appreciation for the court’s decision in the Sunday Ticket class action lawsuit. They believe that the NFL’s approach to media distribution offers various ways for fans to watch their favorite sport, with free over-the-air local broadcasts of every game available. The spokesperson also acknowledged Judge Gutierrez for his careful consideration of the case and are eagerly anticipating the 2024 NFL season.”
