His energy and spirit were infectious, and he had an uncanny ability to make everyone around him feel happy and secure. Niall Horan expressed heartfelt tribute towards his One Direction bandmate Liam Payne following his passing at 31 years old. He shared: “I feel incredibly grateful that I got to see him recently. Unbeknownst to me, the hug we shared and the goodbye we said that evening would be our last.
On Thursday, a joint statement was issued by all four band members, which was later followed by separate posts on their respective social media platforms by Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson. Meanwhile, Liam Payne posted on his Instagram account on Friday, after attending Niall Horan’s concert in South America about two weeks earlier.
Horan expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of his extraordinary friend, Liam, stating it seems unreal. Liam’s zest for living and enthusiasm for work were contagious, filling any space he entered with light. He was the beacon in every gathering, always managing to make everyone feel content and safe.
Reflecting on our shared laughter throughout the years, even over the smallest things, those memories continue to surface amidst my sorrow. We got to realize our wildest dreams together, moments I’ll hold dear forever. The connection and friendship we built is rare in a lifetime, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced it. It was just last time that I saw him, unbeknownst to me that saying goodbye and giving him a hug would mean saying farewell forever. This loss is truly heart-wrenching. My deepest sympathies extend to Geoff, Karen, Ruth, Nicola, and of course, Bear.

On Wednesday evening, Payne met his unfortunate end in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after falling from a hotel balcony as per local authorities’ account. The incident reportedly led to critical injuries for Payne, which proved fatal, with medical personnel confirming his demise at the scene.
Later, the Buenos Aires Security Ministry informed the Associated Press that Payne fell from his balcony in his room. Police were dispatched following an emergency call regarding a potentially violent individual, possibly under the influence of substances such as drugs or alcohol. Subsequently, doctors attributed his death to severe trauma and internal and external bleeding, as stated by Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14 in a release to The Hollywood Reporter.
Popstar Styles expressed deep sadness upon hearing the news. “His greatest pleasure came from bringing happiness to others, and it was a privilege to be by his side as he did so,” he penned. “Liam embraced life fully, with his emotions openly displayed, and his zest for living was contagious. He was affectionate, encouraging, and incredibly kind. The years we shared are among the most treasured moments of my life. I will forever miss him, my dear friend.
Tomlinson declared his intention to serve as an uncle to Payne’s seven-year-old son, Bear, whom he co-parents with ex-partner Cheryl Cole. The musician expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his bandmate, who was a talented songwriter with a keen sense for melody. Tomlinson penned down his feelings, stating that he felt incredibly fortunate to have had Payne in his life but found it difficult to accept goodbyes. He appreciated the closeness they had developed since their days in the band, spending hours on the phone reminiscing about their countless cherished memories together. If given another chance, Tomlinson would have loved to perform alongside Payne again, but that opportunity did not materialize.
Malik expressed that since Payne’s passing, he has been speaking as if Payne could hear him, hoping for a response. In his own words: “I can’t help but think of the selfish part of me that wishes there were more conversations to share between us in our lifetimes… I never got the chance to express my gratitude for your support during some of the toughest moments in my life. As a 17-year-old kid away from home, you were always there with an encouraging attitude and a comforting smile, reminding me that I had a friend and was loved.
He went on to say: “Despite your youth, you were often wiser than me. You were bold, assertive, and unafraid to call out mistakes when you saw them. Although we clashed a few times due to this, I secretly admired you for it… When you departed, I felt like I lost a brother. I can’t describe the longing I have to give you one last hug and bid you farewell properly, to tell you that I loved and respected you deeply.
The band, known as One Direction, was established on the British X-Factor in 2010 and finished third in the contest. They subsequently rose to fame and became one of the most successful boy bands ever, producing popular tracks like “What Makes You Beautiful,” “Story of My Life,” “Little Things,” and “Steal My Girl.” Throughout their career, they released five studio albums: Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home (2012), Midnight Memories (2013), Four (2014), and Made in the A.M. (2015).
They went on indefinite hiatus in 2016, shortly after Malik left the band.
