As a movie buff with a lifelong passion for comic book adaptations and an encyclopedic knowledge of DC Universe lore, I can confidently say that Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman is shaping up to be a masterful blend of intelligence, ruthlessness, and intrigue. The trailer has certainly whet our appetite for more, with the promise of a complex, emotionally raw, and powerful performance that will undoubtedly leave its mark on the annals of DC cinema history.
The first official trailer for Superman revealed a LOT about James Gunn’s new DC Universe movie. We got our first look at David Corenswet in action, both as Superman, and Clark Kent. Heroes like Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner, and Hawk Girl, flew into action. And, Krypto the Wonder Dog even played a large role, saving a bloodied Superman and dragging him to the Fortress of Solitude. As well as the incredible looking heroes, fans also got to see Nicholas Hoult‘s super-terrifying, super-bald, Lex Luthor. According to the actor, his version of the character will have to be absolutely “ruthless” to get the better of Superman.
At the unveiling of the latest Superman trailer (ComicBook.com), I, as a die-hard cinema enthusiast, got an exclusive sneak peek into my portrayal of Lex Luthor in this upcoming Superman movie. Unlike Superman who harnesses his powers from Kryptonian blood under Earth’s sun, my character, Lex Luthor, must rely on brains rather than brawn to outwit the Man of Steel. I shared that, “With this version of Lex, he’s undeniably cunning and relentless, but he needs to outsmart Superman in certain aspects because he falls short in others.” Despite his ruthlessness in Superman, there will be a layer of empathy that viewers can relate to. I elaborated further by stating:
Additionally, there’s a quality to this character that, from my perspective, allows viewers to grasp his motivations, even if they don’t necessarily concur with his methods. In some ways, it becomes clear that the beliefs he advocates might be more beneficial for mankind.
Who Is ‘Superman’s Main Villain?
Actor Nicholas Hoult is equally thrilled for spectators to witness James Gunn’s portrayal of Lex Luthor. Historically, this iconic Superman antagonist has been played by Jesse Eisenberg, Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and several others. However, Hoult expressed that James Gunn’s script delves deep into the “intensely emotional and potent” aspects of the character. He stated this in his words:
What really captivated me about Lex was immersing myself in a James Gunn universe. As you mentioned, it was incredibly emotional and impactful, yet vast in terms of the world it encompasses and the grandeur of Gunn’s creation.
In just under a day since its release, the trailer for “Superman” is already creating quite a stir, amassing over 22 million views and climbing! Despite the introduction of several new characters, there’s still a sense of mystery surrounding the main antagonist. Although Lex Luthor appears frequently throughout the trailer, and Superman is seen squaring off against Maria Gabriela de Faria’s Engineer, it leaves me pondering: Could they be the ones responsible for Clark Kent being left battered in the snow?
The trailer also teased a giant monster flying over Metropolis as Clark Kent dons his Superman suit, standing next to Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane. The giant creature’s identity hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. The consensus from the fan base has narrowed it down to being the Sun Eater from the All-Star Superman run of comics. After all, that is the comic book story line James Gunn’s Superman is most inspired by.
